In the last ten or so years there has been a concerted attack on the Union Jack. This attack appears to have been masterminded by the liberal politically correct brigade, which considers the word Jack to be sexist, male orientated and therefore unacceptable. This lot started telling us that the correct name for the Union Jack is the Union flag and put about many silly stories such as that it is only called the Union Jack on warships.

or

An ensign is a flag within a flag, typically the top left hand quarter of a different flag,

Fantastic read, go on give a few minutes......

After reading it I went to "Frank's Home Page" where I see that he is the Wokingham representative of UKIP, which explains his ignorance.

Re: You have to see this page >>

And the whole thing is pretty stupid as the Union FLAG only becomes a Union JACK when it is flown on the jackpole of a warship which is at the bow. The Ensign, which as we know is flown at the other end of the ship has the union flag superimposed on a white (or in other cases red or blue) background. The ONLY place a union flag is worn is at the jackpole. Hence it's name. The erroneous use of the term Union Jack for a Flag flown ashore was probably started by ex- RN sailors in ignorance of the proper term ashore and it has stuck in common usage but it is technically wrong.

There's nothing like flags (apart from colregs) to get forumites on the warpath!

Crikey, check out Frank's advice for giving up smoking:

"I then did something which I recommend to others in similar circumstances. I copied Homer and personified NICOTINE. I cast Nicotine as a liar and cheat who promises nirvana and delivers hell on earth. I became emotional and started to HATE her. Everyone, not least me, dislikes liars and so I had little difficulty once having personified Nicotine as a lying, hateful seductress in using the hatred to help me resist her lying enticing whispers to smoke a cigarette. It was very hard, I strained at the ropes and like Odysseus screamed to be allowed to grasp the promised pleasures. The ropes of hatred held because in my head I was certain that Nicotine is a lying bitch."

I reckon he's been sniffing those nicotine patches...

Re: You have to see this page >>

Thank you for your valuable contribution to the debate and your friendly greeting.
While I do not understand your post at all I commend your sparkling wit and grammatical turn of phrase and am impressed by your grasp of the subject. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: You have to see this page >>

Oh, I seem to have got it wrong anyway. But, to explain...

In my copy of Internet Explorer, the subject heading on your post read thus:

Re: You have to see this page >>

whilst previously (actually where I made an error, as you had picked it up from one before) it had been

Re: You have to see this page >>

Re: You have to see this page >>

Well, there is a whole nation within the UK who have never had anything to do with this "Union" flag.

The Welsh are not represented in this flag, and most will have nothing to do with it.

Warpath? Not quite anymore, the forumites here can do that for us /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: You have to see this page >>

So what would you want then Boyo? Shall we put puff the magic dragon in the top left corner for you?

Re: You have to see this page >>

Ah! But you don't say which one my lover.... St Pirran or the Union?
Never met a Cornishman yet who would admit to being "English".....

Re: You have to see this page >>

So I think Ive got this straight now.

A sailing vessel on starboard tack may fly a union jack on the opposite side to the mainsail provided they also have a motoring cone ,pregnant crew and can produce Part 1 registration document.

Fantastic the knowledge you can pick up on these forums /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: You have to see this page >>

Of course! Now for your bonus question, Who was St Pirran, and where did he come from?
