I posted a question last night (Sailing as Nature Intended) about nude sailing.

I know the options given were tongue in cheek but I'm surprised at the responses.

And yes, I know the statisticians could argue about self selecting samples but it seems that a majority of sailors on this site have or would sail in the nude!

My gut impression is that a poll of a random selection of householders/tenants would show that a majority aren't naturists or even inclined that way.

Now this naked sailing can't be practical in the British climate. So I asume its happening overseas.

So what's going on? Is it some sort of secret sailing naturism that I don't know about, or is it just a practical attempt for that all over tan? Or what?

Nude Sailing="Bareboat",Tongue in cheek"Not suggesting anythingKim",Gut impression= "When the boom hits you in the nether regions"Inclined that way=" Which side do you dress"Self selecting samples ="Plain for all to sea!"

The question is not would you want to sail without clothes but would you like to sail with me if I was not wearing any! I would be worried to find that you would......
Only advantage I can see is less washing of underpants and socks. Spilling the cocoa might be painful......

There are several nude sailing charter companies around. There is one right here at Haslar Marina that organises nude holidays.

As for me......I like my body as nature intended, and when I was designed nature intended it to be well covered up;)

Isn't that making an assumption that nudity = sex? Or maybe you were making some other point I missed.

Personally, on those rare occasions when I am both alone and at anchor I have been known to go au natural. Underway I think it's just bloody dangerous, the most dangerous being not the obvious bits but the lack of deck shoes. Stubby toe at a critical moment can cause no end of harm.

I'd be disinclined to remove my clothes in front of others out of consideration for their feelings. For those lucky enough to have it in the first place, nudity usually starts to lose it's aesthetic beauty somewhere soon after 30 years of age.

In the unlikely event that I was fortunate enough to have a 20 something vision of lovliness aboard I'd be more than happy for her to enjoy the sunshine as she might see fit! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

i do warn female crew that in a major panic situation i may emerge unclad from my bunk. by inference, if i am clothed we are unlikely to sink, if i've got it all hanging out you have more than one reason to panic.

removing clothing in british waters has become steadily less appealing as the years roll by. there has to be a good line to do with the need to go further south as one's bits hang further south but it's too early in the morning to work it out.

Isn't it obvious? A pair of long woolly socks, a stout pair of seaboots and a smile. What more do you need to wear underway?

Isn't "stout" a good word. One doesn't see it often enough, I think I shall become "stoutist".

Of course you're right, and a Royal Yacht Squadron cap.

I shall remember that should I sail with you !

Anyway the one thing I've not seen mentioned so far is the risk of sunburn to places normally kept covered up. I had a friend who got a sun tan machine prior to a holiday and had to wear a single sock when he went to the beach - strategically placed of course !

Like all things British, what we say in public is not what we do when out of the public eye! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Experience shows that silence is rarely the only reason yotties seek out secluded anchorages. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

As for can it be done in the UK? It is a measure of your type of sailing if you are not hardy enough to find at least 2 weeks a year for the minimilist approach in UK waters /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Have to tell you about the time I was talked into a holiday on the mediteranean island of Formentera..

In those days. (Mid 70s) clothes were passe for tourists on Formentera, but the locals continued about their business as though all was normal.

We have an excellent photo of me standing stark B**** naked at a beach side ice cream kiosk, buying 99's for the family whilst chatting up a demure young spanish girl behind the counter. She was dressed in the full "food serving" white overalls and cap. The photo is just taken as I trying to find somewhere to put the change.

Quite surreal.

Now here's something I AM qualified to comment on!

I once ran a register of yotties who were also naturists. It was called (and I suppose still is) The Cast-Offs. The emblem/burgee was a teddy bare (sic).

There were/are many, many subscribers. In the Solent, I have seen many naked bodies when the weather has served especially in Studland Bay.

In Greek waters, I suspect it is the norm from my experience.

I'd rather be naked

Compared with the wriggling under bedclothes I have witnessed in mixed crews, there are certain incidental advantages. Insofar as cooking is concerned, the "bête noir" of naturists both ashore and afloat is definitely frying sausages!

When considering body shapes, remember - we were all made to the same pair of drawings, just that the manufacturing tolerances were rather wide. More seriously, the only point of visual contact between naturists is the eyes - believe it!

In my researches I have established that 95% af the population with a mental age less than 90 have been skinny dipping (and the other 5% can't swim).

As most on this forum seem to hide behind pseudonyms, why not run a poll?

/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

PS sorry I've repeated a poll;- it me took two days to recover from finding the boat show and I missed the earlier one.
