Good evening, can anyone offer me any advice I am considering relocating our motorboat from lake Windermere to york on the river Ouse, as it’s closer to home so we can use it more as a day boat rather than long weekends. we have already been and viewed the marina which looks modern and well maintained, is anyone on the forum based at York or nearby, to offer any advice, we visited the marina on a very sunny Saturday afternoon last week, the marina berths seemed full of vessels but not many people seemed to be out on the jetty’s or taking boats in and out considering the great weather ?
Any info greatly appreciated
I’ve tried searching forums for reviews or blogs but I struggled to find anything within the last 3 years

I once got a princess 37 all the way to Boroughbridge, canal boats can get to Ripon.
very easy cruise up to Nun Monkton (pretty village - bugger to moor up), after that it gets a bit shallow in places so you have to watch the rainfall levels.

Watching with interest - we are on Windermere and as much as we love it - its very restricted and always thought about moving to York. Similar concerns to you on where to go, what to do etc.

Plenty of boats there so people must like it but then mooring costs are 1/3 of windermere and there must be a reason for that too!

Interesting point you raise...we have just come back to Windermere after a couple of years on Loch Lomond as we found the 2+ hour journey too much for a day trip. For inland boating, put the boat as close to home as possible and use it more often was our conclusion. At 45 minutes away, we can now go for the evening. So if the Ouse is close to home, go for it and enjoy!

I'm at Naburn.

For the price (10m ~£2500pa) the facilities are very good, clean modern shower block, good café overlooking the river (if a little pricey), chandely not the largest but keeps the basics. The staff are very helpful and boat owners friendly. Water and electric to all pontoons. Hard standing with electric for winter working on etc.

As to boat movements and where to go, indeed many never seem to move and apart from York (limited overnight mooring) not a lot of places to go.

Feel free to PM if you have any questions and let me know if you decide to come.

Thank you for the advice, we currently have a 2 year old toddler so using our mastercraft for wakeboarding is out of the question for a few years, without securing the child to the boat !!! We thought we would move to york to be able to go on day trips pootling about into the city and it would give me chance to get some maintenance done as it’s close to home , I’m just worried after a few months we will be bored! I’ve also just completed my Rya Dayskipper and would like some experience on rivers and tidal waters. I’m planning on using the boat for another 2 years before we upgrade to a vessel with berths to stay overnight but I don’t want to use it in saltwater so our options are limited !!

I hate towing the boat for days out it adds a lot of time fuel and slip fees to the day out, I prefer it in the water so when we wake up and the suns shining we can jump straight in the car and get straight out on the boat !

If you want tidal then Hull Marina, still not a lot of places to go apart from a day trip to Spurn but you could do a long weekend up to York or Lincoln.

I think most rivers suffer the same thing.

I was on the Thames for a while and whilst the Houses of Parliament are fun a few times and the upper Thames nice a weekend limits your cruising to x miles each way.

For that reason I occasionally hire a river boat and each time choose a different bit as without a week you can’t get very far.

Quite a few York boaters run into town of a weekend, mainly for socialising. There are short term mooring points at the back of the museum gardens, Queens Staith (please leave a gap for the rescue boat which is busy at weekends) and Kings Staith although that gets rowdy of an evening.

At West Stockwith canal basin there is a slip and plenty of room for storage ashore. But perhaps not secure enough.

Moorings at Torksey. In the Fossdyke / tidal Trent have recently been upgraded.

Marinas at Farndon and Newark are not far off the A1.

I live in Leeds and keep my boat at South Yorkshire Boat Club. For me being in a club has been a totally different experience from having my boat in a marina (Boroughbridge). I've found it much easier to get to know people and there is always someone that will help you out with boating woes. I take my two kids (15 and 11) and there are two other families that I have met who's kids are younger.

I admit it is not as glamorous as being based just outside York but there are a lot more cruising and mooring options available. As well as some local rural locations; you can also get to Wakefield, Doncaster, Selby, Leeds, Goole, Castleford and Thorne all within a weekend. You've still got York, Lincoln, Sheffield, Hull etc available for longer trips. All subject to boat dimensions and capabilities of course. More information available on website www.sybc.org.uk.
