A friend of mine has to take the heads off his Ford York 6 cyl diesels and has asked me to find out if anyone knows if, when putting new head gaskets on you should use a gasket compound or just dry?

Just make sure all surfaces are clean and dry(and flat!) and don't use anything.
Just a torque wrench!!!
If he is taking the head off because of leakage/ over heating I would recommend
getting the heads skimmed,as an insurance against recurrence.

If he is removing them because of over heating or leakage I would recommend having the head face skimmed as an insurance against recurrence.
