YM: Won't be doing that again in a hurry

Because that is the US business model, most magazines are subscription based with very few news trade sales.

Anyhow we have argued the pricing of digital subs vs prints subs to death on here.

What I can tell you is that in the not too distant future there will be further offerings on Kindle Fire, Nook etc so theoretically we should have all bases covered.

One thing aside VAT is the cut the retailer takes too, they don't do it for nothing you know...;)

When you offer the digital subscription for free with the hard copy and use VAT as an excuse to try and collect the same ammount for yourselves for a digital only sale can you really be surprised that the punters feel you are overcharging.

Hey ho though it is your business and yor choice, just as it is mine and I suspect many more not to subcribe

As I said at the very beginning of this thread, you can purchase YM through the Apple app store, this is a true YM app and can be found by searching YM.

At present the only way of buying YM (our app, the magazine, call it what you will) through the Android store is to go through the Zinio App (so we are an app within an app) BUT this is about to change and before long you will be able to find the YM app outside of the Zinio App in all other stores, (Barnes and Noble, Google Play etc)

AS I said I have never seen or heard of the forum reader that you showed me and as I said it looks liek a home made one but I iwll ask our IT guys to look at it.

Does that makes sense ? and I don't mean that in a patronising way, I am trying to help.

It is definitely homemade - or at least unrelated to IPC.

From the app's author: "DISCLAIMER: This application IS NOT operated by, sponsored by, endorsed by or affiliated with given forum in any way. Developer of this application is NOT responsible for the content posted to this forum. All trademarks and copyrights are property of their respective owners." Given that any device that can run this app can run a browser I really don't see any point in it.

This thread is very entertaining, thanks to all. Shame on you Richard for trying to bring facts into it!

I think this adequately demonstrates why the Apple app came first after Zinio. Apple users have happily paid for the print, then Zinio edition, then paid for the YM app separately, understanding that these things cost (very little for what you get) money, and that the app store and Zinio are driving the business, resulting in more sales than people rocking up to YBW.com and asking for the magazine.

Android users are banging into walls mumbling "cheap, it pdf, cheap...free why isn't app this free? Reduce why app your free, costs, why isn't this....free...cheap....does it have the wifi's?"

:D

Once the confusion around terminology had been cleared up I think what was actually being asked by Android users was "can we have an Android app please" because, being unable to access the iStore as we don't worship at the altar of Jobs, we would like access to any extra content or functionality that is provided by the app. Richard has now explained that a) that app will be here soon and b) you won't get much, if anything, more than you would get with Zinio anyway.

The pricing is a separate issue which applies to iPhone users as well as far I can see. I can see both sides there as I think it's not worth me taking digital instead of paper at the current pricing but I can also that there are costs to be recovered in the digital model.

At least, that's how I read it.

In the United States, the print version of Yachting Monthly is $62.99 per year. The Zinio version is $53.61. The added advantage of the Zinio version is that I don't have to hide old issues to keep my wife from throwing them in the trash.

£4.99

Bargain!!!

I am in the UK for just a couple of weeks per year so getting hold of the latest yachting world or what ever is a struggle. Now when i do find them, Sunsail greece or Marina Dalmatia, Croatia the price is close to 10 or 11 GBP. I also have to physically walk there when i could be gettng on with other jobs, yes how do you value your time.

Presumeably on an export sale to me in France you wouldn't charge VAT ??

Sorry looks like your paying VAT

When you dispatch goods to someone in another EU country, and they're not registered for VAT in that country, you should normally charge VAT. This applies even if you're sending them to another part of your own organisation.

Given that any device that can run this app can run a browser I really don't see any point in it.

It's a little awkward to use the forum on a device with a small screen, because it was designed for a desktop PC. Things like the thread page number links make very small targets for my fat fingers :). It would be nicer to use a purpose-built app, and indeed a large number of forum sites do.
