YM: Won't be doing that again in a hurry

We do publish our own apps we just choose to do them the same as the magazine so you get like for like, its no different from any of the apps you describe above? they all go through the middle man?

The middle man (the app store) is just the vehicle to distribute?

:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

What 'own app'???
The only YM app I could find is the forum reader - which you were unaware of.

As I said at the very beginning of this thread, you can purchase YM through the Apple app store, this is a true YM app and can be found by searching YM.

At present the only way of buying YM (our app, the magazine, call it what you will) through the Android store is to go through the Zinio App (so we are an app within an app) BUT this is about to change and before long you will be able to find the YM app outside of the Zinio App in all other stores, (Barnes and Noble, Google Play etc)

AS I said I have never seen or heard of the forum reader that you showed me and as I said it looks liek a home made one but I iwll ask our IT guys to look at it.

Does that makes sense ? and I don't mean that in a patronising way, I am trying to help.

Presumably you can take a screenshot, though?

(Ideally you'd be able to just save the thing as a PDF, but typically they're worried we'd all go on a massive spree of copyright infringement and stop paying for it, if they allowed that.)

Pete

can't you download a pdf printer ( or other) and print anything to that? (copyright notwithstanding, obviously not PBO or YM!).

Seems to be a case of confusion about definitions.
Zinio is and app which allows you to buy/download/read YM.
The YM itself - bought through Zinio - is not an app.

But, if as you say, we will in future be able to buy outside of Zinio I'll check back when that happens.

You may be right that the Forum Reader is something home-made - no access to The Lounge.

I agree with you on the naming of the app but that's but it is commonly refereed to both here and when dealing with Zinio, even if it is within the Zinio app.

When we launch outside of the Zinio app I am hoping life will be a lot easier and less complicated!

Cheers

Oh dear, i have opened a can of worms! Sorry.

Fundamentally, if you want to run on the iProducts then you must go through the iStore - no ifs or buts, it is all locked down with certificates etc. If you want to develo, you have to pay a developers fee and you then get a certificate for YOUR device that you can develop on, when you are happy you submit it to the app store and Apple DECIDE if they want to include it. They then put it in the store and take ~30% of the purchase price. Anything purchased through your app is also subject to this extortion.

Google take a similiar fee for the priviligae HOWEVER you do NOT need to be in their store - I can offer a link whereby you can download and run my app.

The concept of the app stores is solid, the lack of freedon around app distrubution (and association competition which is GOOD for the consumer) is the issue... "our way or the highway" there are no other options

Oh do stop being so argumentative Richard! There are plenty of experts around here who can tell you how to do your job better than you know how to do it, so just pay attention and get on with it !! ;)

I don't know as I don't have the Zinio stuff on my computer, but I presume it does its best to prevent the content being taken outside the application, including by printing. If it doesn't, then there's no point to it and we should just be downloading PDFs from a Web page (which we'd like but the mags wouldn't)

Sorry pardon - won't do it again.
I must know my place - must not rock the boat or upset the apple-cart.
Should be really grateful for whatever I can buy at whatever price.

By the way, did you enjoy your full price boat show tickets?
And did you enjoy them more than the low-lifes on here looking for discounts or freebies?

Come on chaps its Friday! anyhow I enjoy the banter.

Have a good weekend

Re Richard.
Ah, I think I am wiser now to how these things work, thanks for taking the time..

So Murdoch and the digital newspaper industry are as reliant as anyone else on third party 'stuff', I hadn't realised. That is quite a throttle to hold..What a lot of changes in the industry, ongoing, eh?

Brain off now, back to looking at pictures:)

He's right if course, what decent marketing chap would want feedback and ideas from his customers? Heaven forbid such a crazy notion.

I would love it as long as we all spoke the same language so to speak.

Lot of misunderstanding on this thread I am afraid.

Feedback and ideas are fine as long as they are valid and workable and not already in place and misunderstood or not found.

Apps / digital is new technology for all needs to be fully understood by all ( inc us) before being challenged etc.

Happy to listen to suggestions etc as they are realistic and workable.

Cheers

We learnt that one previously when a customer dared to suggest that the pricing for digital reprints was rather high and if reduced might generate more demand and hence income. It is so nice to get a second round of patronising statements about commerce, VAT etc that many / most on here probably know a heck of a lot more about.

And I wonder why I bother to reply ...

Have a good weekend chaps.

It is indeed true you simply can't win on here and I really don't know why I fall into the try to help trap every single time.

One day ( soon) you may get someone that's not so fluid with the truth or tries to be honest with you.

And with the greatest of respect this thread has shown there is a HUGE misunderstanding when it comes to Aps / digital etc.

I am open to debate and critasiscm but leave out the insults please.

This thread is very entertaining, thanks to all. Shame on you Richard for trying to bring facts into it!

I think this adequately demonstrates why the Apple app came first after Zinio. Apple users have happily paid for the print, then Zinio edition, then paid for the YM app separately, understanding that these things cost (very little for what you get) money, and that the app store and Zinio are driving the business, resulting in more sales than people rocking up to YBW.com and asking for the magazine.

Android users are banging into walls mumbling "cheap, it pdf, cheap...free why isn't app this free? Reduce why app your free, costs, why isn't this....free...cheap....does it have the wifi's?"

:D

It's all very nice blaming Google, Apple, Zinio, Android... and the VAT man, and yet the US yachting mags I mentioned in post #1 are able to offer their digital mags on Apple and Zinio at 60% below the print subscription cost!!
I would guess that the Apple & Zinio costs for them would be the same, and you can not blame the rest on the VAT man.

I'm not usually a fan of all things American, but if as Richard says they have a different business model, than it is one IPC should seriously consider adopting.

Oh how I wish we had a 'tongue-in-cheek' emoticon on here. Since my reply, Richard has explained the position quite succinctly.

Reasonable comments and feedback are always welcomed by anybody in a sales and marketing environment, even if its negative.

Making out that he doesn't know his job, or might not have thought of the issues before now, is just ignorant.

I am not pointing any fingers, merely generalising at this point.
