I read the YM review of the new Oceanis, and my one question was whether the tester actually tried low speed manouevring. I'm not expecting the reviewer being asked to get a brand new unfamilar boat into an awkward berth, but a little play in open water might have been interesting. Twin rudders usually mean virtually no ability to "kick" the stern round with a burst of ahead. Twin rudders on a boat of that size also often means a bow thruster is almost a necessity if you have a tight marina mooring. I know Beneteau have a rotatable saildrive on some of their larger boats, but no mention of this on this review, or whether the boat was fitted with a thruster .

I recently “hosted” YM in a boat test review of my boat. I was astounded at the level of detail taken; measurements, descriptions, constant recording of notes on a dictaphone whilst sailing. Reefs in, then shaken out. Upwind, Downind...and lots of engine / manoeuvring trials plus many hours spent later in the marina taking photographs and examining things! I reckon the reviews we read are summaries of about less than 5% of the data gleaned. It was an impressive insight as to how much attention they pay and, as it was a nice October day, a great way to end my sailing season! Made me think of boat reviews in a different way

Thought provoking

Its also indicative of the value of the printed media - you will not get that level of attention/detail from the electronic media - because there is no income to pay for it.

This forum may be invaluable - but its not quite the same.

Sorry but that's a complete misunderstanding of electronic media. There is plenty of money available, and many people have made extremely good businesses out of it. Whether or not they are thorough has literally nothing to do with the medium they use. Printed media has considerably more examples of being worthless in my opinion.
