YM Elan 360 boat test

Just some news about the Elan 360 offshore racing potential: An Elan 350 (the 360 is a MKII with the same hull) had just finished brilliantly in 3rd (Real time, at 9m to the second) the famous big French Transat for amateurs, the Transquadra. With about 100 yachts racing, mostly top RACER-cruisers, surprisingly the Elan beat the two big favorites, the brand new Jeanneau 3600 and the JPK 1080 (European boat of the year). The race was won by two JPK 10.10, 1st and 2nd, (the boat that won the Fastnet) and JPK dominated with 5 boats over the 8 first.

The Elan 360 is a cruiser racer so its racing potential, namely its offshore racing potential matters to some that will be interested in the boat. It was said here that the Elan 360 was nothing special around the cans with a crew and I had agreed but said that the boat had a good racing offshore potential, specially solo or with a short crew. I had saw that in other races and it was confirmed now with the podium on the Transquadra (duo race).

Contrary to the other boats that made the top 8, that are much more racers then cruisers, the Elan 350 is much more a fast cruiser then a racer. We can see that not only in what regards its more adapted interior to cruising but also in what regards the price difference, the one that separate a top cruiser-racer from a mass production club cruiser racer. In the Elan 350/360 we should be talking about a performance cruisers while boats like the JPK 1010, Sunfast 3600, JPK 1080, Sunfast 3200 we are talking about boats from other league, much more racers than cruisers.

Whilst not wanting to split hairs, that's also exactly what I said. Those results are not a surprise, the Elan is VERY quick downwind.

That still doesn't make it an offshore family cruiser for the sort of conservative sailor who still thinks Westerly are modern.
