YM Cover Photo

[ QUOTE ]
Picture of a boat sailing at night with the Cruising Chute drawing nicely

[/ QUOTE ] At night I expect it would look slightly off-white. Perhaps even a bit greenish.

Would be nice to see that photo, magazine hasn't arrived yet.

Fair point...but

You raise a fair point, but I think we're all guilty of not always doing things by the book, but you or the skipper evaluate the risks and make a decision based on those.

In an ideal world, I would have shot the cover the night we did shoot, however there was little to FA wind that night, and unless you'd like to see a motoring yacht with lifejacket clad crew on the cover (which wouldn't do a lot for our sales figures) YM had to buy in a picture.

As I'm sure you can imagine, when it comes to photographs of yachts sailing at night, we have as much choice as we had wind! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif We wanted to do something different for the cover that would portray it's contents so we went with the image that's on the cover. It was about the only image we found that tick the majority of boxes for an image good enough to go on YM's cover...I wasn't involved in the discussions, so I can't tell you whether the lifejacket point was brought up...I'd like to think that if it was, we went with the best image, rather than a lesser one (i.e. out of focus, too smaller resolution, badly composed, no room for coverlines etc just because they were wearing lifejackets) We would have loved to put a great "safety correct" night sailing image on the cover, but the fact is that they simply don't exist (unless I take them) because that isn't always how people sail.

Believe me, you would not believe the amount of thought that goes into the covers of YM! Personally I'd like believe a good image will always shine though, whether there are lifejackets or not....Some of my best pics have been taken when it's blowing old boots, and I don't think anything less of the images because the crew aren't wearing lifejackets when according to the RYA and RNLI they should be.

The choice, whether to wear a life jacket or not, is up to the skipper and the individual. As a magazine YM tries not to preach and tell readers what they can and cannot do. The RYA teach that as soon as you reef you should put a life jackect and safety harness on....the RNLI teach and recommend that a life jacket should be worn on deck at all times. When I'm working I always wear a life jacket because the thought of trying to swim while wearing big heavy cameras is not a thought I'd like to dwell on. However once I've finished working and I'm on the yacht the life jacket comes off unless the skipper says otherwise.

If you read the article it suggests wearing life jackets and safety harnesses, I don't think someone would buy the magazine after seeing the night sailing pic, and the coverline on the front and not read the article inside.

It would be a different matter if we'd used the image a size that it could CLEARLY be seen that the person wasn't wearing a life jacket. Like if the person was 60% of the image. But lets face it the person is about an inch high on a 12 inch high cover, not really in your face is it? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I love night sailing...., and night diving...., and orientering in the forrest at night time....., paddling in the moonshine even in the rapids... and I use PFD when diving and paddling. Maybe the salvation is in those cases within reason.

As a reader of New Civil Engineer I got fed up with posts such as these condeming the publication of any real life photos of construction when the avid armchair readers could spot and complain of any infringement of H & S.

I am not condoning irresponsible behaviour but lets have real life pictures showing the event and use our own common sense about any safety.

Re: oho!

You are so wright - where do I have to report for my well deserved caning.

Oh shucks thats illegal now isn't (see I am learning the use of an apostrophe) it!

Must not do wrong but cannot be punished for it! Now thats a conundrum isn't it!!

Looking at your profile, I would have thought that you would have been an advocate of the basic safety guidelines for night sailing. Lifejacket and harness if leaving the cockpit.
Still - I see your awards have lapsed.....
