The engine has started stalling at those inconvenient moments when moving off a marina trot - runs fine out of gear but stalls when put into gear. It also runs poorly - if it was a petrol engine a bit like leaving the choke out too long - won't put on revs, then decides to work properly and no problem from then on until you repeat the exercise. If it's the injectors surely they would clear after a few hours running smoothly?

Hi,
May be worth getting the fuel rack checked out as I had a similar problem with my 2003. It would cut out when going back to low revs ( tick over) so seemed like an idling adjustment, but it turned out to be the return springs on the fuel rack sticking.
Been fine since they were replaced...

When was the last oil change? I have seen this problem on several diesel emgines and like has been said before sticky control rack but cleared with some good flushing oil run through the engine.

where would I find the fuel rack and what does it look like please?!

[/ QUOTE ]It's part of the control system for the fuel pumps, but you definitely shouldn't start messing about with it without specialist knowledge (which you don't have or you wouldn't be asking the question).

If you want to find out about it, one of the few places you can still find a workshop manual online is via the BlueMoment website. The "Motoren" website someone referred to has removed most of the Volvo downloads, possibly because of copyright issues.

It might be easier in the long run for you to get a VP engineer to look at it.

Sounds more like air being drawn into fuel system to me. I had problem with 2003 dying at low revs and thought it was fuel lift pump but turned out to be poor rubber seal on feed from tank through filters. Enough to draw air in but not leak fuel out. Try bleeding at main filter, if small bubbles continue to come out then likely air is getting in. I would check all this thoroughly before assuming mechanical fault. My experience is that these things are most often of simple origin. Good luck.
