Greetings all

I have a Garmin 160 Blue fishfinder but cannot find a suitable location for the transome mounted speed transducer.

Does anyone know if a thru-hull transducer is available?

Does anyone know where I can get technical support if I dont have the serial number with me (wont get back to the boat for a while)

Regards to all

The same as my lowrance the transom mount txducer can be fitted insde the hull if you have single skinned GRP.

I have mine externally mounted, but the blurb with it suggested :-

The transducer installation inside a fiberglass hull must be in an area that does not have air bubbles in the resin or separated fiberglass layers. The sonar signal must pass through solid fiberglass. A successful Transducer installation can be made on hulls with flotation materials (such as plywood, balsa wood or foam) between layers of fiberglass if the material is removed from the chosen area.

They suggest bonding the txducer with epoxy to the hull.

Your manual is on the garmin site <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.garmin.com/manuals/FishFinder160Blue_OwnersManual.pdf> here </A>

You can check by placing the transducer in a plastic bag with water and move it around to check locations.

or just add some water, about an inch will do, set it down and look. there are now available thru hull transducers with wheel and newest has no moving parts to snag anything.

I stuck my transom-type transducer to the inside of my hull with ordinary five-minute epoxy. My hull is glass fibre, single skin, and I mounted it just forward and slightly to one side of the keel. The depth measurements are perfect, as checked with a leadline.

Yes, through hull transducers are available, but unless you have a wooden or double skinned hull, they are not necessary, as the transom kount unit works perfectly well through GRP as long as it is properly bonded. Through hull units also tend to be quite pricey - Humminbird charge nearly £100 for a bronze transducer.

As long as you have the model number, you will get all the techie stuff you need off the websites. You dont usually need a serial number.

Many thanks everyone for your suggestions but the depth transducer is working fine and I have only placed it in a puddle in the bilges.

My problem is with the paddle wheel speed transducer which, if transom mounted either wont reach the water or, if at certain heal, seems to lie in an area of turbulance.

My quest is for a through hull paddle wheel (or similar) transducer that will easily link with the Garmin wiring loom
