DO you recon 10mm chain is too big for a 30 foot yacht ?
AS I got some 8mm calibrated test piece and it seems too small for the gypsy fitted to my boat?
looks like 10mm may fit?

10mm good then?

I'd consider 10mm chain oversized for a 30' boat and, unless you already have xx metres of it, would be inclined to change the gypsy and buy 8mm.

However, the one size on which DIN (German) and ISO (the rest) chain link measurement varies is in 10mm, so, before you go off to get your 10mm chain do make sure which one your sample might be.

My suggestion would, however be less fraught with possibilities for error, will possibly have a good effect on your pocket and will probably ensure your boat sails better.

You must understand that many posters on this forum hurl insults at each other from the relative comfort of their wheel chairs, rather than trying to answer honest questions. ;-)

There's now't wrong with being 'over-chained,' with the possible exception of carrying too much weight in the bows and it being a complete mare to haul back in when it jumps off the snubber and the whole lot pays out in fifty fathoms.

If you pop your gypsy off, it should be marked as to which chain it suits. Note I said should...

The additional weight is the problem. 10 mm chain weighs 1 kg per metre more than 8 mm, almost twice as much. Assuming you have 50 metres of it, that is 115 kg of chain in your bow locker. Few 30 footers are going to perform well in that condition. I would look into replacing the gypsy.

plus if you decide to add some more 8mm chain in the future, you don't have the hassle of remembering which sort of chain you need to buy.

gypsies aint cheap either!

But if you buy 8mm you will save, money as well as weight, over the 10mm anyway. For a 30' yacht (no mention of what sort of 30' yacht - but you imply traditional, so heavy?, long keel, old yacht, imperial gypsy?) I might throw 6mm into the mix.

6mm G70 no doubt ;-)

In fact with a normal 30' sailboat you'll probably not overload G30 6mm With a 31' I'm using 7mm G30 on my two kedge anchors.

I'd not recommend G70 to anyone, I'd mention the possibility but leave it at that. But you cannot buy a G70 6mm, the smallest is 8mm, but you can get 1/4 inch. But I know a few using 6mm or 1/4 inch on larger yachts than a 30' mono (without issue) and many using 8mm on much larger yachts. With decent snubbers I really do not see the need for larger chain and carrying 50m of even 8mm on (or in) the bow of a small yacht looks questionable. its like having someone standing on the bow all the time (and you would never tolerate that). It saves money, uses less power, if planned in advance uses a smaller, cheaper winch, the chain should fall into the locker much more easily. What's not to like.
