Yesterday I grew up.

Has anyone ever read any bad experiences of Wharram cats?

I thought I read a lot, but have not read or heard of them performing badly or breaking up.
Watch wildlings sailing and you will realise that they die of rot. I have not heard of one breaking up but I have listened to many light hearted complaints from owners trying to round a headland. One owner described to me a five hour transit of a headland. He gripped the tiller bar so hard wishing for more speed that he was white knuckled from sheer boredom. He said he could not hold a teacup for a week.

I love Wharrams by the way. They absorb all the dislike and ire from grumpy monohull owners towards catamarans in general which deflects their dislike from me in my fantastic Prouts..

I will try to find the link, but I thought if built properly they used marine grade ply (Robbins) and were sheathed in epoxy and glass fibre. They have been around since, what, the 60’s?

I thought many do ocean crossings and many are liveaboards.

I have never inspected one or sailed one.

I would rather have a prout; I believe the build quality is excellent.

Well that was difficult to watch.

They are certainly a breed apart from many other types of boats.

Look very time consuming.

We sail our boat but also use it as a second home. A two bedroom, two bathroom flat with a sea view would cost well over £500k is Salcombe, Newtonon Ferrers or Dartmouth . For a tenth of that price a boat give the option in all those locations plus Channel Islands, France ect. Harbour authority mooring and mainly diy maintenance cost about the same as second home council tax and house costs. Absolute bargain or so I tell my wife.

German guy we knew had his lashings on the cross beams fail, part way to Cape Verde. Beautifully built boat but very basically equipped, no life raft or radio. Fortunately they were spotted during sinking and taken aboard a cargo boat, ended up in S America somewhere minus Wharram.

Hopefully somewhere near Fray Bentos
