Hi
Just purchased a Yeoman Sport plotter which comes with the cable to connect to GPS with bare wires.

Is there any of you guys that have wired these up to plug and sockets for use in the cockpit that could advise me where you got the plugs and sockets from and which ones to use.?

Cheers

Mike

Hi Mike

I wired mine so that I can use it at the chart table or in the cockpit. As I have access to military standard waterproof connectors, I used a couple of these which we no longer use (not enough ways, but plenty for a Yeoman). Not sure that I could justify the cost otherwise.

The chassis sockets are Amphenol 6 way MIL-C-26482 type 10-06S available from RS (part number 301-4664) at £10.68 each. The mating plug on the Yeoman is type 10-06P part number 301-4399 cost £18.82. RS web site is <A target="_blank" HREF=http://rswww.com>http://rswww.com</A>

Regards
Tom

Cost is what is bothering me too, as I want a socket for Wheelhouse, flybridge and for a second handheld GPS, thats over £40.

The alternative is a stereo DIN plug/socket and replace them every year.

Cheers

There are some cheaper Hirschmann waterproof (IP67) connectors with silver-plated contacts which are much better than DIN and will probably last for many years:

6 way cable plug p/no 359-4407 £4.64
6 way chassis socket p/no 115-1985 £4.97

Again from RS

I interfaced my Yeoman Sport Plotter to a Garmin GPS 76 with an inline latching plug and socket. They are 4 pin which enables both NMEA in and out and the GPS is supplied with 12v from the Yeoman via the same plug/socket.
The plug was from RS stock number 253-9819 and the socket is RS 221-2457.
The plug/sockets are IP68 rated and lock together with a locking ring. They are also quite small and neat. I think the sockets also come in a panel mount version which would be useful if you intend to mount supply sockets in different locations.
The Garmin plug (if indeed your GPS is a Garmin) was purchased via the Pfranc website. I used the very flexible lead from an old PC mouse to make up the interface lead.
If you make up your own leads, double check the colour coding to avoid expensive mistakes, especially if the lead wire colours are different from the Yeoman and or the Garmin. You can end up with 3 colours for one interface function as it travels from GPS through to the in line plug/socket and then to the Yeoman.
