Hello :)

I like reading/study about oils and I have a Nimbus boat with a Volvo penta MS4B gearbox, according to the manual I should use a 75w90 GL5 oil or mobil 1 SHC 75w90 if Volvos oil is not available, the funny thing is when I starting to compare the safety data sheets its obvious that Volvo 75w90 GL 5 and Mobil 1 SHC 75w90 is the same oil in different containers and if I then reads the specs from the Mobil 1 SHC 75w90 it says GL4/GL5 spec, its has GL4 spec but its also recommended for GL5 applications.

Mobil 1 states that the oil has mild EP-additives (guess thats why its still has GL-4 spec). So... Why does volvo states in the manual that i should use a GL-5 oil, when their own oil is more like a GL4/5 hybrid? Is there yellow metals in MS4 gearboxes? Is it really safe to use a pure GL-5 oil? Maybe many of the MS4 breakdowns is related to that people is using pure GL-5 oils? (if there are any yellow metals inside, and I dont know how they usually breakdown, just a tought of mine..)

*Is there yellow metals in MS4 gearboxes?
*I wonder if any of you have used a real "full power" EP GL-5 oil for a long period of time in a MS4 gearbox with good results?
*Has anyone tried a 75w140 oil instead of 75w90 with smoother gear engagement etc?
*How does a MS4 gearbox usually breakdown?

Maybe the real Volvo penta recommendation should be "API GL4/GL5 , MT-1" ? Or well, thats actually what they recommend if they recommend their own 75w90 and M1 SHC 75w90.

Best regards!!

Another thread on the subject of MS reverse gears elsewhere at the moment.
Anything our resident expert, Volvopaul, contributes is well worth taking into consideration.

Hello! Yes i saw that but it would be good to know if someone knows if there is still yellow metals in the MS4 as in MS3, It should be the clutch cone if so.. I know if I buy a new clutch cone for my MS4 its in stainless steel of some sort, not brass. But its not clear if MS4A or B came with brass/yellow clutch cone from the factory.. Someone needs to know 🙃😋

If ? memory serves me well, clutch cone is case hardened steel.
All bearings are either ball or needle , you really do need to order a set of seals and gaskets at the same time.
