Ayress, the timber ship that comes in here most frequently to collect small timber to take to Troon, ( the good stuff all goes across to Ireland) is alongside the timber pier flying a yellow flag prominently on her rear mast. So I presume she suspects she has got a case of the virus? Her previous trip was to Ardcastle, a floating temporary timber pier in the forest. Surprised to see it in a boat travelling between British ports but I suppose it is a sign of the unusual times we are living in. she is still loading so I presume she will be heading back down to Troon, hopefully taking any contagion she carries with her.

Flag Q. 'My vessel is healthy and I request free praqtique'.

So opposite of your suspicion! :)

The following Signals are to be shown on arrival by Ships requiring or required to show the state of Health;
By Day;
a) Q flag – Signifying ‘My Ship is Healthy and requires Free pratique’.
b) QQ flag – Q flag over first substitute
- Signifying ‘My Ship is suspect i. e. I have had case of quarantinable diseases
more than five (5) days ago or there has been unusual mortality among the
Rats on board’.
c) QL flag – Q flag over L flag,
-Signifying ‘My Ship is infected i. e. I have had cases of quarantinable diseases less than five (5) days ago’.

The double QQ was the one I was taught about for doombugs.

According to this 'International Code of Signals' (ICoS), revised in 2003, QL flag means: 'You should go astern'.

Could anybody confirm if this edition has been amended?
