tried lots of cheap applications and decided to really go for it to bring original gel coat back to a nice gleaming white as opposed to dirty yellowing colour. Somebody said Y10 would clean it but on visiting chandlers was told that G6 rubbing compound would do better. Found that this performed inferior to Mer. If Y10 works how much is required to do top half of 21' displacement. Would it be wiser to use oxalic acid and where could this be obtained. Reluctant to paint but would it be better just to paint with white 2 pack?

I've used Farecla G7 on a foam 'mop' to good effect, it's fairly aggressive so you don't want to do it every year. Y10 is only oxalic acid in a gel form and very expensive. Ask your local pharmacist to order some in for you. It works wonders.
Painting is the absolute last option if the gel coat is otherwise in good condition.
Good luck
