http://www.ybdsa.co.uk/ Had a look at there website , thinking of buying a yacht . They have yacht brokers and yacht surveyors together , is that a conflict of interest? In my eyes that can not be a good thing can it? I remember the last yacht I was going to buy from Ancasta ,all they had was YBDSA surveyors on there list . I withdrew from the purchase.:(

Nothing to stop you employing any surveyor you want
The surveyor is acting on your behalf, all the broker is doing is giving you a list of reputable surveyors.

High jimi, i do use an independent surveyor everytime . I just find it strange that if you walk into Ancasta they give you a list with YBDSA surveyors and no one else. Looked at the YBDSA website Ancasta plus ybdsa surveyors are under one roof ?

Its an association that you have to pass a certain criteria to be a part of with the ultimate aim of protecting or at least steering the consumer / buyer towards a reputable broker, surveyor.

You are under no oblation whatsoever to use any of them but surely if you are looking then its a good place to at least start looking.

Withdrawing from a purchase because all they had was a list of surveyors that happen to belong to a trade association is surely not a valid reason from withdrawing? I am assuming they kept your deposit?

This has to be wind up.

Please, please please tell me its a wind up.

I assure you its not a wind up ,look on the ybdsa website its not rocket science . I did not hand over my deposit thank goodness I went elsewhere and was verry happy. All non ybdsa surveyors I have spoken to have insurance.I know and I do use other surveyors ,my question is ,is it right to have brokers and surveyors under one roof, I would say no .

Ancasta listing surveyors does not mean you have to use them. Cannot understand what perverse thinking would lead you to withdraw from a purchase just because the broker suggests a particular group of surveyors. You are buying the boat from a private person. You are choosing your own surveyor. What difference does it make to you which surveyors Ancasta list? It is under no obligation to list any let alone have any influence over who you choose.

As suggested either a windup or some ulterior motive as you don't seem to be able to give a reason for your action.

Would you use a broker and surveyor under one roof. There is no ulterior motive.I was simply asking the question is it right to use a broker and surveyor who is under one roof. If I am parting with a lot of cash I want to make sure I get it right and I have. I do not or want to use any brokers or surveyors on the ybdsa website .Go into Ancasta and ask for a surveyors list ,they will all be ybdsa surveyors . Thats up to them but I find it strange and wrong .

AND YES I know I can use a independent surveyor. That is the reason for my actions. Happy sailing.

Astonishing

What on earth did you think would happen if you used a YBDSA surveyor?

Why did you not have the boat surveyed by a non YBDSA surveyor if you thought there was some mysterious hidden agenda? (Which there isn't)

Ancasta dont "use" surveyors they just gave you a list of qualified local ones.

You could have (and should have) used who ever you liked. What on earth did you walk away from the boat for?

You have completely and utterly missed the point.

As you say I can use an independent surveyor ,if you go to Ancasta and use a surveyor off there list they are not independent because ybdsa surveyors and ancasta are under one roof so I walked and found a yacht that I have since purchased . Ancasta take your money and get a ybdsa surveyor off there list to survey it, mmmmmmmmmmm . Gotta go just about to cross the shipping lanes.

Ehrrr ok.

Lets leave it there anyway. Have a good trip.

Bangs head against wall repeatedly......

(It's not April 1 is it?)

Ok, its not their list but most of the time potential purchasers will ask if they know of a surveyor, they are of course supposed to be impartial so the best they can do is offer a list of surveyors who belong to the only recognised association out there. If anything they are helping the potential purchaser in the process of buying their chosen craft. As said before they dont have to use them but surely its better to have a starting point and help the person concerned who may not have any knowledge of surveyors or any idea on where to look?

Seems like you need to take some lessons in umderstanding the relationships with professional bodies.

Ancasta do not "use" surveyors unless they own or are buying boats themselves, so they can use whatever surveyors they like, just like you. When they are acting as a broker, they do not instruct the surveyor, the client does.

So, like everybody else cannot understand why you have a problem. It is no different from an estate agent holding a list of solicoitors who are members of the Law Society.

Im not a troll and I do not have a problem,I simply asked a question and you bit me head off for asking.Non regulated surveyors ? Just because they are not members of the ybdsa doesnt mean they are not regulated ,there are hundreds of good surveyors who are not members of the ybdsa in Europe. How many of you here are ybdsa surveyors ? Gotta go sorting out watch system for tonight, testing electronics on board doing 20 knots down to Brest.Fabulous sailing at the moment.

Why are you asking the question here? Are you implying there is something improper going on. If you have a problem with Ancasta, take it up with them, but for the life of me I cannot see what your problem is. Are you a member of another body who wants to get his name on their list? I would imagine if you ask Ancasta for the name of a surveyor in another country they will refer you to the appropriate body.
