Yawl Mizzen mast offsets?

Hi all, I have a 15 foot Wootton Bridge dayboat (Devon Potter). I am giving consideration to converting it to a cutter yawl. My question is, if the mizzen mast is offset slightly to either port or starboard (to clear tiller) say about four inches from the centre line will this this cause any problems?

Also, how do you add a photo attachment to postings on this site?

i used to teach sailing on St.Marys in the Scillies, in drascombe dabbers, these had offset mizzen masts and also offset sheeting points. they sailed fine for a small boat. But you often had to ease the sheet while tacking else they would just sit head to wind.

Lots of small yawls have an offset mizzen to avoid it getting tangled up with the tiller. It looks a bit odd but it doesn't seem to be a problem in practice.

i've seen some tillers curved acutely to go around the mizzen.
sort of like a ''u'' to fit around the mizzen

I thought definition of yawl was mizzen aft of rudder stock in which case your tiller would surely be f'ard of mizzen. (Owner of yawl)

To me, a yawl is anything that needs a boomkin stuck out the ass end to control the mizzen boom, if the mizzen mast was aft of the rudder stock on my boat, it would need a sky hook to hold it up, the rudder is hung on the transome /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

yes oakum that's what i've always believed .don't know why i said that. i have seen tillers however as i described on ''ketches''
