Yatch varnish

Review of "bright" finishes in this month's PBO. Written by Richard Hare and based on his extensive tests published in Classic Boat over the last 5 years or so.

Does not to go into specific brands other than to illustrate the different types and if you want details of the longevity tests you will need to go back to the source articles.

Confirms what everybody who has used them for exterior woodwork knows - that high solid content woodstains such as Sikkens Novatech/Novatop outperform all other products on cost, ease of application and long life. Only downside is that you can't get a mirror finish - but then you don't have to spend several days of your life applying a product where only a small proportion stays on your wood - most being lost to evaporation or rubbed away between coats.

The only finishes that are remotely comparable for durability are two packs (at 3-5 times the price, difficult to apply and brittle) or flexible polyurethane such as Coelan - up to 10 times the price.
