Yarmouth Harbour ~ more walk ashore

Very interesting - I'd not seen this. Whilst the proposed changes will make the harbour more 'efficient', imho they will destroy much of the character of the harbour and make it more like a marina :(:( I think it'll be a shame if they go ahead with that as drafted.

Will connecting the pontoons to the shore really make that much difference to the charater of the harbour? It's nearly all pontoons already, and piles are a PITA (if you'll excuse the pun)

Nick - I think it will. The chaos of the place makes it interesting and gives it character. It's a great place to sit in the cockpit watching all the comings, goings and near misses. Watching large Mobos tie up to the piles is one of the highlights ;);) The re-alignment of pontoons and making them all walk ashore will certainly make things easier, (though with no more overall capacity), but it'll be a less interesting place to be imo. How much so is hard to judge. Having said that I doubt it'll affect how often we visit, and all pontoons being walk ashore will probably increase total visitor numbers for the harbour.

I think it's a shame. We boated in the Solent for 12 yrs and Yarmouth was our favourite port of call precisely because it had that slightly olde worlde chaotic working port feel to it and we enjoyed being rafted up to friends and strangers alike. As for the water taxi, yes you could have to wait a few minutes but it was part of the charm of the place. I guess all the harbourmasters will be made redundant to be replaced by a faceless jobsworth in the office just like every other marina. Anyone know whats going to happen to the visitors pontoon on the north side of the access channel because it's not shown on the drawing?
One last point. The total number of berths (300) will not increase and yet, they say that they estimate an increase in revenue of £250,000 pa. There's only one way thats going to happen and thats through an increase in mooring fees which, of course, is what this is all about. They want more of your money

I dont have a problem with it, most of the character has been lost from the harbour already and the new layout looks much more user friendly to me.
They will be able to get rid of a few staff in their dories and one of the taxis, so there will be some significant savings there.
Yarmouth is no longer a cheap overnight stay, by the time you factor in the per head costs of a taxi and showers it is actually quite an expensive place for an overnight stop. We were charged £18 for a 37' overnight on a buoy outside last month.

Quite agree on what you say on character and price. The pre booking and taking the credit card # spoils the fun bit esp. if you need to cancel due bad Wx. Gone are the days when Brin would 'fit you in somewhere'.

Its now a business.

What I do not quite understand is that Lymington and bits of Cowes have retained the 'can do' and will find you a spot and not rip you off too much either...

Last time I looked to try and book a 12 metre berth they were fully book at weekends until the end of september, I also think the harbour isnt value for money when you pay nearly£40.00 per night and then have to pay extra for use of the showers.

We visited at the same time as we tried to book and that saturday evening there were spaces available on the walk ashore berth area, the staff did not bother to ask us if we wanted to move, lost out there then on extra revenue!.

My friend also had his dinghy towed away by one of the staff when he went for petrol and to pay, not an apology anywhere in sight.

IMHO the eating places are expensive, I think Lymington has a lot more to offer, reasonable pubs, £14.00 per night for non walk ashore on a pontoon and free showers.
