Yarmouth Harbour IOW

I'm with you on Lymington though, certainly my "favourite port of call", practically bought my daughter up there. But.....on the Town Quay, can't be arsed with messing about with the buoys. Now if they were to start looking at repositioning the commercial boats there so they could put in walkashore pontoons, that would be an improvement. Now where is that email address for Lymington Harbour Commissioners...........?

Mostly we have a pontoon berth when in Lymington but not connected to shore which suits us fine. The pontoon opposite Berthon is kept free at weekends for use by boats above 40ft as many of the buoys are too close together for these. Coming in on a Friday evening as we do we usually get on here and if really lucky on the inside too where there isn't room to be rafted up. If we don't get on here we pick up the bouys rather than go on the quay, not into the hassle of multiple rafting and at 41ft we are theoretically too big to go on there. We pay less at Lymington for 2 nights than it is for one in Yarmouth on the walkashores, the difference pays for a very nice lobster dinner on board courtesy of Seafayre!

The more one reads this thread the more one can see the advantages of Lymington. I suppose that now the river moorings there will simply get even busier. On the other hand maybe some of the better heeled weekenders will forsake the Lymington marinas and go to Yarmouth. A price squeeze would be no bad thing!

Only a matter of time before Yarmouth allows pre-booking and it becoming impossible to ‘squeeze a few more in’ as they harbour boys do at the moment. Another protective wall outside the harbour and new non walk-ashore pontoon might restore things. All we would then need is for Yarmouth Town to say hello to the 21st Century regarding restaurants etc.

The difficulties with the pontoons will not be new, just different from the existing ones - it is already difficult using any berth in Yarmouth with a tide running.

But one of the reasons put forward are the "navigational conflicts" that occur at present, looking at the plans, as you say the problems won't go away they will just be different.

The biggest problem I have with the plans is that I just can't see the point of them. Looking at the survey they undertook by no means everyone wants walkashore facilities, but that is what everyone is going get. I would have no problem in increasing the size of the walk on pontoon but I don't see the need for this radical redesign which won't result in any additional berths possibly fewer.

Google Earth shows Yarmouth about 5 years or so ago and predates the current walkashores, so there were still more pile berths than there are now:

Where were all these sailors who love mooring on piles on the day the photo was taken? Looks very much to me as if the piles are predominently motor boats and the vast majority of sailing boats are on the pontoons.

Looks like a "Sociable" day on the 30 foot pontoon!

For those of you who are interested, there is a further thread from last month on this topic in the motor boat forum. Just search for Yarmouth and you will find it.

It is particularly interesting as one of the contributors is the harbour master!
