Yarmouth Harbour Changes

Just seen the new proposals for Yarmouth Harbour what a shame losing all those pile moorings and having them replaced with pontoon moorings , no more fun and games rafting up.
No more cheap moorings for visitors and residents and the taxi firm left with no customers.
Also no gain of extra berths and they will have to move the lifeboat .


From a personal point of view it is a shame as it is a trust port full of character and if the proposals go ahead it will just be another marina .
You can look the proposals and voice your objections on the harbour master website www.yarmouth-harbour.co.uk and also copy in the Royal Solent Yacht Club Yarmouth

So this will mean the cheaper non walk ashore moorings will be lost, enabling YH to make more money from us, its vastly overpriced on non walkashore compared to Lymington in the first place.

Will you then have to book every time you want to go there as per the walk ashore system they have at present??

We have visited many times this year and asked for walk ashore on spec, to be told there are none available, to then in the evening look at empty berths on walkasore pontoons.

All a bit mickey mouse IMHO.

These changes are proposed because surveys taken of harbour visitors and residents alike show that more walkashore is whats wanted by harbour users in general. The Commissioners didn't just think them up one wet Saturday afternoon.

If you don't like our prices and our setup - the answer's simple. Don't Come - 'Mickey' and I don't mind if you stay in Lymington.

The answer I made was honest, if your staff offered us walk ashore when they became available we would have moved over to one, instead they do nothing, so dont you dare insult ME, in all my years on this forum I have never been spoken to like you have, if you have a problem with me then send it via a PM, and yes I did take part in your survey. All I do is contribute to this forum its very rare for me to ask for help, if all your good at is keeping people away then dont bother to reply!!

All I was saying is a price comparison to 2 miles across the water where you can stay in Lymington on piles for £14.00 per night instead of £20 plus that Yarmouth charge, I think you had better bsend me a pm with you contact details on BEFORE I contact the HM, I dont think your doing your PR any good at all.

You started the insults - "all a bit Mickey Mouse" you said

£20 overnight is not "vastly overpriced" in the whole scheme of owing a boat, more expensive than Lymington I grant you - but so what?

I'm simply pointing out that you have a choice of where to go - and you can pay the going rate or exercise that choice - but please - quit whinging.
 
Well for us the Yarmouth walk ashore is £35/night whereas on the piles it is £20.50 but we usually stay 2 nights arriving on Friday night. That makes it an extra £29. For us Lymington is £16.50 per night on the buoys (or walk ashore rafted at the quay) so in all £37 cheaper for our weekender. That to me is a no brainer, you can keep Yarmouth, I'll take Lymington.

BTW we can go to Cherbourg and pay around £25 per night with free electrics, even with a very unfriendly exchange rate, and since we usually arrive after midnight (French time) on the Friday that is our total berthing bill for the weekend. By my calculations that leaves us £45 to put towards a significantly better meal out than Yarmouth could ever offer. Not surprising really that we pick Cherbourg quite often, although as raggies we don't have to factor in a big fuel bill, if any.

I believe the new set up at Yarmouth will drive the husband and wife or family crews away and their place will taken by the corporate charters, sailing schools or the likes where the mooring bill is split between anywhere from 6-10 people, not coming out of one family budget. Hang on that might even be a good thing, lump all the scumsail mob in one spot...

Blimey, prices aside I don't like your attitude, don't think I'll even bother catching the ferry to Yarmouth if thats how they treat visitors.

Are you some kind of troll? I hope so because if you have anything to do with the Yarmouth Harbour Commissioners, your attitude absolutely stinks. As for the YHC proposals, it is a revenue increasing exercise, pure and simple. An extra £250k per year is the target, I believe. I don't accept for one moment that YHC would be making these changes based only visitor surveys. IMHO, it's a shame because the changes will adversely affect the charater of the harbour and turn it into just another soulless plastic tub parking area
 
I think it's a shame. We boated in the Solent for 12 yrs and Yarmouth was our favourite port of call precisely because it had that slightly olde worlde chaotic working port feel to it and we enjoyed being rafted up to friends and strangers alike. As for the water taxi, yes you could have to wait a few minutes but it was part of the charm of the place.

Deleted User, I've taken the liberty of quoting your comments from one of the other threads because I agree wholeheartedly with what you have said and the comments with which timgriffin started this thread.

To be frank I was a bit put off contributing to this last night when I first read it. Still, so long as one can expect a warm welcome from the caulkies as one parts with one's hard-earned north-island banknotes, I suppose Yarmouth will stay popular.

I don't know if anyone else has read the report on modernising trust ports commissioned for HMG from PricewaterhouseCoopers? The development proposed for Yarmouth seems entirely in line with the generality of these proposals.

Will it put me off visiting Yarmouth? Probably not. But it won't seem quite the same. I would guess that the visitors' pontoons will be largely taken up with charter fleets which will probably help the pub trade but put off the more contemplative visitors who don't relish a boisterous lads' night out atmosphere.
