Morning all

Does anyone have any advice on boat yard storage for a 22' yacht in the southend area that has access to power, water etc and would be suitable for working on over the winter. Was thinking about wallasea (sp) or Leigh. Any other ideas welcome. Ideas of costs including cradle hire would be welcome.

Does anyone have experience of the swinging moorings off Wallasea? and dinghy launch and recovery, costs etc

I am also looking to borrow/ hire a trailer for a weekend. Boat is 22', 3'3" fin, 7' beam weighing about a ton. Any suggestions welcome.

TIA
Patrick

Hi Patrick

The two places (well there are more but it involves club membership) in Leigh are Leigh Marina right next to the station and Mike's Boatyard. I can see them both out of the window.

I don't know what access to utilities or cradles they have at Leigh Marina - I'm happy to walk along and ask them (a few hundred yards). I know they have power and water at Mike's because I kept my old Snappie there for several winters. I don't think they have cradles but as that is even nearer I could enquire.

Roger

Thanks Roger

I'm going to be in Southend this weekend so will take a look down there.

They've got three large sea bass for 12 quid at the boat sheds so need to stock up anyhow!

Thanks, Patrick

I worked at Mikes BY in my youth and they never used to have cradles. They chocked boats up on barrels and blocks.
Have you considered Wallasea or N Fambridge? It's a bit further out but at least you can get your car by your boat.

Wallasea looks quite good. less than 20 mins in the car from Gt Wakering and access all tides I think. They also do a water taxi to Burnham for £3 in the summer.

Cheers, Patrick

How long has that been there?? I've lived in the area all my life and clearly walk around with my eyes closed. :)

In the old days we knew it Johnson, Son and Jago. The big shed next to the station. Pontoons, big crane, the whole shebang. The word Marina is a bit grand to put it mildly and they don't have a great reputation (or much water).

Ahh yes.. Thanks for that. Moons ago we used to launch a speedboat (shhh don't tell Dylan!) from two-tree island. We must of been looking in the wrong direction. That or too busy parading with the rest of the Romford Navy! :D

If you are looking for somewhere near Gt Wakering then Carter & Ward at Rochford could be the place. The esteemed Full Circle winters there - a good d-i-y yard. FC on holiday (well, camping:D) this week but I'm sure he'll give you the full SP. Details here

Leigh Marina is, well, different. I don’t know what draft you have but there’s not much water. There is power (but not too many sockets) and one tap. Not as cheap as it used to be, either. They have a cradle now (they don’t use the crane any more since they dropped my boat last March - I still haven’t got it back from the menders). But it is very handy if you want the Southend area.

A lot of people use Carter and Ward at Rochford – I hear they are pretty good.

Mikes Boatyard do keep boats on their wharf but I don’t know if they are accepting any more. Might be worth a ring, ask for Jonathan.

Thorpe Bay Yacht Club have good winter storage with excellent facilities (and a handy bar) but all the boats are lifted in and out on the same day.

Dauntless at Benfleet have storage facilities.

Apart from those its over on the Crouch.

Thanks for all the responses so far. Am going to check out Leigh, Carter and Ward and Essex Marina, Wallasea this weekend.

Main priority is getting a trailer sorted at some point.

Cheers
Patrick

Thanks for the replies...

Didnt make it to Leigh, but had a mooch around Carter and Ward and Essex Marina on Saturday. Couldnt find anyone at Carter and Ward to speak to but Essex quoted £1054 PA inc VAT for a 8m swinging moooring/hardstanding.

The moorings are all directly off the marina. Doesnt matter if you're in or out, the costs are the same plus £15.24 p/mtr lift out with pressure wash and £10.89 p/mtr lift in. Minimum charge for 8m boat. Have to supply own cradle. Think I'll get one fabricated. They had an open day at Essex - distinct lack of rags and sticks tho' ;) They had a few very nice Aston Martins on display, but wont be doing much business with this bloke who's trying to get a boat for 2p...

Essex Marina is 20 mins away, C&W only 10 but will need to check out the prices.
Jim are you going to keep FC there or is it just for the winter?

Cheers, Patrick

Patrick,
I take FC to Rochford in winter because it is very close to me in Canewdon. They are very cheap on lift in lift out and storage charges, and if you join the Roach Sailing Association they have a self help group that removes the sting from the cost of things like mast lowering and raising (mine was 30 quid all in this year).
You hadn't mentioned moorings in your OP, but again Roach Sailing Association have swinging mooring in Paglesham Reach which are 'economical'.
Go to Yahoo Groups and search for Roach.
Also they have a website where you can find joining info. About 6 quid a year.

Funny that ! , i was at the carter & ward yard on sat , visiting another countess 28 owner and boat , seems just the ticket there , i think i will be making enquiries for a over winter stay my self only 28 miles from home versus the 48 to get to bradwell and alot cheaper .

If you want to go further up the crouch to brandy hole yacht station you can winter there. They cradle you out for, at present, £2-80 per foot, and you can stay in the yard for £1-35 per foot per month all facilities water leccy. Good bunch of people use this yard, and a lot of helpful information is on hand. Moorings are available at present prices are £2-20 per ft per month. Ive wintered there for the past few years and have never had any problems there and will be back there in the new year. Bosses names are Justin, or John
