YAPP Hardware/Software - what is "best"

Angus - yes I can get the PICKIT 2 on its own but without the demo board how do I test the circuit and program the PIC? (and see my question of Nigel below). Or can I just use a breadboard or vero?
Nigel - the DV164121 comes with a 44 pin demo board and a PIC16F887 - is that compatible with the 18F26K22??

Apologies, it seems the part number search branched to another page.

There are hundreds of PIC Demo Boards available, do a search on eBay. Or you can build your own: it is possible with breadboard, but can be a bit unstable.

Just a thought: Does the current board made by "Angus" have a ICSP port?

The 16F range are old. The 18F range don't cost much more and are better to use.

To get a simple program going you need a breadboard, a processor with legs on (DIP package), a 100nF capacitor, a 5 square pin header to connect the PICKit2 and some solid core wire. To get a LED flashing you need a LED and a resistor about 100 Ohms.

You can program and run like this. When this is working you can add a serial line driver to get some text out. Then a LCD display.

Yes I bit the byte last night and ordered a PicKit2 plus a few bits and pieces from MicroChip (we don't hesitate to run the engine to keep up speed so why worry about a few $ here and there - I used over 1,000 litres on my last trip). It will accomodate a 28pin PIC. I'll PM Angus to arrange to pay for the YAPP bits etc. I'm not going to pay $200 for a BASIC compiler (when a C one is free) so I'll have to improve my C skills. I'll keep an eye on the "factory floor" thread from now on.

Just reporting that the PICkit2 gear arrived today from the US and "Designing Embedded Systems with PIC Microcotrollers" (Tim Wilmshurst) arrived from the UK. Royal Mail won by 1 day. Now the fun begins.
