Despite the plate being missing, I'm now fairly confident from looking at photos, and speaking to engineers my engine is a YSM.

I've changed the engine oil, and removed the 'filter' for cleaning. The filter is fitted onto the bottom at the front with a triangular plate, and has a T handle on the outside. I got the impression this was a paddle in a tube with holes, however on removal I found several thin discs on the inside, that revolve with fixed ones to scrape the sludge off.

I did not realise the position mattered, and had to twist it to remove it. It fits in a round hole, but has an extended piece with a hole that lines up with one in the engine block. The trouble is there are 2 holes, and I need to know I have the correct one. With the flange vertical, the hole lines up with one with a visible channel in the block, which I suspect goes to the oil pump.

Has anyone changed their oil, and removed the filter for cleaning, and knows which way it is fitted.

I have also discovered the oil light switch and water temp sender, or warning switch have wires that lead nowhere. Why do people do such bodges, and how do so many get away with it for so long?

Appreciate any help.

I remember doing the same thing on my YSB but I thought that because of the positioning of the three holes on the triangular plate it could only go on one way I may have been wrong though and put it on wrong. I think I also remember putting it on in such a way that any gunge collected when you turn the handle would fall down the way.
Probably get more better info if you post you question <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.yanmarhelp.com/msgboard.mv>HERE</A>

hope the link works it's the first time I have tried it

If I remember rightly, there is only one way to fit the triangular plate to the block,
the distance between the holes are not equidistant so it can only go on one way.
It had me fooled as well but as it was on the bench it was obvious, a pair of dividers should help you find the right angles.

Thanks - I think the holes are equidistant, but did I try it another way? I don't think so. So if the distance is minimal I probably haven't noticed. I would expect it to fit only one way, but knowing my luck, don't want to find out I've blocked the oil to the engine, and find out the hard way. I don't want to take it off and try turning it simply because it sits in the oil, and it will mean draining it again, plus the mess etc. Ok on cars, you just undo the sump plug and drain into a container.

Just as a matter of interest, I bought an oil transfer pump I saw advertised on Boats and Outboards a few weeks ago. Although slow, it does work and pumped out most of the oil, saving a lot of mess from spilled oil in the bilge etc.
