New boat bought in March. Had a really high pitch/frequency noise that gave me a headache as soon as I turned the electrics on.

I traced it to the engine panel and some small electrical buzzers that the previous owner had wired into the warning light terminals for the oil and water temp in order to give an audible alarm.

They came on fully once the ignition switch was put to position one then off when the engine was running.

Simple I thought, just replace the buzzer....but ....with a new buzzer we still get the same problem.

Its like a small amount of current is passing, not enough to ignight the warning bulbs but enough to get the buzzer to give out this high pitched noise. I dont know if it would be audible to everyone due to the frequency but it drives the poor old children insane and so I have disconnected them.

Anyone have a simplar problem or know a quick fix please.

Thanks in advance Nick

Sounds normal for a warning buzzer, Until the oil pressure is up the warning light will be on and causing the buzzer to sound. Once the engine fires up it should go off and not come on unless oil pressure drops, i.e. you have a problem or the engine has stopped. Likewise if the overheat light comes on the buzzer should sound.

Sounds as if the buzzers are wired up in correctly. I was considering fitting warning buzzers to my YSM8 panel but now I'm not so sure.

Can any forumites advise on the correct wiring for these?

sorry I probably didnt make it clear but this awful almost inaudible high pitched noise comes on when the boat electrics are turned on even when the keys to the engine are not even in the engine panel.

Once the ignition is turned on so the oil light etc comes on the alarms kick in fully so as to give the correct warning.

Thanks Nick

Sorry just re-read your post I now see what you mean. I remember the lights on my YSB used to glow slightly when electrics were on without ignition on. Sounds like you have the same thing only it's causing the buzzer to do the annoying thing.

Yes sounds similar to your problem Spyro. I wonder what causes it ? Is it something to do with a defective blocking diode in the alternator.

Is it possible to wire a seperate diode into the wires inbetween the warning bulbs and the sender units ?
