Has anyone replaced a YSB alternator with anything other than a Hitachi?

The existing (totally knackered) alternator is a LR135-31, the subsequent ones are larger and don't fit into the existing bracket. I have sourced one of those at £160! and at a push could have a new bracket made.

The original I have been quoted at over £300! from two Yanmar dealers and one of them even said "no one ever buys them" - what a surprise. I have e mailed various alternator companies and haven't managed to find anything under £200. As I only paid £450 for the engine originally I am struggling to reach in my pocket to this extent.

A rebuild is possible but I am working to a timescale, off on 2 weeks holiday on the boat on Saturday week, and they couldn't promise a finished job by then so didn't enquire after the price.

Somewhere there must be a Lucas/Unipart/Whatever alternator exactly the same size - has anyone any ideas? I am going round the scrap yard looking for Nissans, Mitsubushis etc later in the week, but is there anyone out there who has already been through this, or has anyone with a YSB got an alternator other than a Hitachi fitted to it?

Your best bet is to have the alternator rebuilt by an automotive electrical repair shop - try the yellow pages. I had a Lucas one rebuilt but it did take 3 days as they had to get a part in. Look around for an alternative repairer. Good Luck.

Rebuilding is an option but sometimes they will not be able to get the parts for obscure/old alternators. Hitachis used to be fitted to toyotas. Take the alternator to a big breakers yard and ask them to find something with the same mount. You may also need to change the plug and pulley as different manufacturers often have different plugs.

You have the solution to your problem in your post. Give the part no to any reputable motor factor and he will be able to look up an equivalent.

I thought that too - spent about 3 hours in Lucas with them on the phone to 3 other dealers and a rebuilder - no joy. All they could come up with from the serial number is a "direct equivalent" that didn't fit. This is a bit of a back street job, the sort of place where someone says "Yeh mate, looks like a ....... I think I've got one out the back".

Had some success on line, but still looking at £200 +.
