Yanmar YM engine problems

Dear all,

I have a 3YM20 in my Pacific Seacraft 24. It is a good engine but not without problems. after just 500 hours it sprung a leak. the fault was traced to the heat exchanger. I discovered that the lower pipe is simply pressed into place whereas in the GM range, it was threaded. Why Yanmar decided to skimp here can only be guessed at. After 4 months! they finally replaced the exchanger.

Having wasted so much time fighting Yanmar for a new exchanger under warranty I started to become disillusioned with their after sales service. When after a further 500 hours it happened again I was none too pleased. The mechanics were sent and agreed that the fault was the same as before but when they came later to change the exchanger they brought with them just a new hose saying that they wanted to try that first!

Clearly there is a fault with this new range of engines and Yanmar are dragging their heels on the repair. I still do not have the second exchanger replaced and I still have a leak. Yanmar are almost impossible to get any sense out of.

What I would like to know is, are there any other YM owners out there with similar problems? perhaps you have a drip but have not yet noticed. Take a closer look at the lower pipe just to be sure. If it has happened to me twice surely this is not a coincidence.

Cheers

Benjy
