I hate to say it but I have neglected my boat for two years. In that time the engine has not been started. Recently I tried to start it but it wouldn't even turn over. I am fairly new at this. What should I be looking for or should do to get it up and running again?

can you turn it over by hand/with spanner on crank pulley?

It is either seized (unlikley) or more likely, just the batteries/starter/solenoid/cables.

If it was seized, you should hear the starter/solenoid clicking in and it making a good straining noise!

Hi

As already mentioned the engine has to be turned over by hand, so get a socket of the correct size for the crankshaft bolt head and using a rachet handle attempt to turn the engine, you may have to extent the handle to get things moving, please ensure the ignition is all switched off before doing this. If it does turn over (rotate the crankshaft a few times) and I would hope it does then you will be looking at the electrical side of things mainly the battery I would have thought - good luck and let us know how you get on.

What model of engine and when you say 'wouldn't even turn over' do you mean using the electric starter or were you trying to turn it over by hand? It could be as simple as the battery being flat or as complicated as an engine that has seized up.

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately I won't be able to get to my boat for about a week or so. I will try you suggestions and let you know how it works out.

Open the decompression levers whilst you are turning by hand it will make it easier. If you do this whilst turning with the starter motor and drop the levers in one at a time it will initially take the load off and may start as you drop the decompression levers in.

After 2 years you would definitly need to start by charging or replacing the battery. After that if it still wont turn do as suggested previously. Does it have a starting handle? Uuse that in stead of spanners or sockets on the crank you will find it easier and know you are going in the right direction. You could have other problems after that if it has been sitting for 2 years but getting it turning first would be a start.

What yanmar is it?
