yanmar won\'t start

Yanmar 1GM won't start ! The engine hasn't been fired since last november and doesn't want to start. Have got compression ,diesel and air .Have tried heating the intake air and have checked the injector it should go but doesn't.Can anybody give me some tips as I don't want to burn the starter out trying . Cheers

Is there any smoke from the exhaust when you crank it over? If you have fuel going in then the exhaust is usually a bit smoky.
Have you left a rag blocking up the inlet?
Have you bled the high pressure line at the injector while you're cranking it?
Is the stop cable working properly, not stuck in the off position?

if it will turn over but not start - then it doesnt have diesel or air or compression by definition. start with the fuel cos its quite possible for a tiny air leak to allow a lot of air in over the winter. so bleed the fuel system. then check the air filter to ensure lots of air is available and the manky yanmar foam hasnt collapsed and blocked everything. make sure the engine stop lever is not pulled out and the fuel tap on the tank is open. make sure the filters are fresh and clean.

if it still doesnt start, remove the injector but leave it connected and turn the engine over. stand reasonably clear so the spray doesnt touch you - and see if the injector sprays ok.

If it sprays OK, then put a little lube oil down the bore through the injector hole (just a tiny bit, not half a pint) to help seal the rings and replace the injector.


try starting again and report back. open the throttle well and give the engine a good turning over.

Things that make my Yanmar hard to start

Jammed stop cable (in stop position, the Bowden cable on the stop cable outer slides back, leaving the lever on the engine in stop position as the stop knob is returned to 'run')

Forgot to put the throttle lever to full speed in neutral on a cold day.

The injector face is covered in a layer of carbon deposits messing up the spray pattern (I use a stainless steel tool like a Swiss Army knife to scrape carefully around the centre pin)

Low battery voltage, its not turning fast enough. Then when it starts the alternator charging the battery stalls it.

Air bubbles somehow in fuel feed.

It is not a good idea to leave the starter running for more than 15 seconds, the engine should start immediately.

Could well be low battery state combine with "first start of the season" blues! Like all above ensure that the diesel is getting tho the injector etc (i once had a prob and thought the oil was getting there but in effect only bled as far as the injector pump. Ensure youir bled right to the compression fitting on the injector... crack it and hand crank the engine) I always then start by decompressing thus allowing the engine to reach as higher speed as poss the dump the decompressors on 3/4 throttle.

Waking up a \'lazy\' engine that has been asleep to long.....

This is one of the rare (?only?) occasions when a dose of Easistart Ether can be used to kick a sleepy engine into life. I had a Bukh 20 which had not been run for 18 months, but had been totally reliable before that.

Nothing would induce the thing to fire. In desparation we gave it a shot of Ether.... the poor thing nearly leapt out of the boat with shock at such abuse, promptly woke up and got to work. It always started perfectly after that - terrified of being given another 'shot' I guess!

If a couple of shots of Ether do not get it to fire, then start doing the various checks described by others above. I have used the same technique to wake up road vehicles that have been 'asleep' for a long time. It proves quickly and easily whether non starting is due to a fault, or the engine is just being 'lazy'.

But never - ever - use ether regularly. Its a sure fire engine killer!

Are the battery terminal and starter connections getting at all hot? If so, the starter motor voltage is reduced, and it may not be turning fast enough to allow the engine to catch.

A shot of WD40 is a good temporary fix for hot connections. Only temporary as the WD dries off and the connector goes resitive again, but enough to get out of trouble short term.

On my 1GM10 you can hear the injector, injecting fuel by slowly turning the engine over by hand with the decompressor lifted. If there was much air in the system I guess it would be silent.

All obvious covered -good luck - but don't forget to

1 - speak to the engine in a low menacing voice explaining in explicit and graphic terms what will happen to it if it doesn't.

2 wave large metallic object over it in a threatening manner (large lump hammer etc.)

Mine actually starts best with no throttle, i would second the bleed system idea, use the handle to turn it over to bleed air once the low pressure side has been done with th useless lift pump.
