I want to make my own gaskets, but on measuring a new (pattern) one, the thickness varies from 0.36 to 0.53mm.

So I don't know whether to use 0.4 or 0.5mm sheet.

The engine is a 1GM10, cooling water pump gasket pt No. 128170-42090.

Thanks all.

Would not of thought it would make much difference,I used a piece off an old chart to make a new gasket as its waterproof paper.

I doubt if its critical. The pump engages with its drive via a tenon so that would allow a lot of tolerance. I've certainly used instant gasket in the past without any problems. The original gasket always looked to me like a very expensive bit of wrapping paper (You can tell I'm not an engineer!)

The difference is not critical at that thickness. However you don't want it to be much thicker as it could lead to leakage from the end of the impeller. You could avoid all that, of course by fitting a Speedseal which seals on an O ring instead of a gasket. Makes removing and replacing the cover a doddle rather than a PITA that it is with the standard cover.

I once used a glossy magazine cover once with a smear of grease It lasted with no leaks until the next time I was changing the impellor The gasket that came with the impellor had the holes in the wrong place.
I would have thought chart paper a bit thick and might cause the cover not to seal against the impellor but if it worked for someone it might be ok.
