No not in th eplan yet, but the outboard is now 13 years old and wont last forever. I have been doing my homework!
 
None of them - I would go for a Bukh if it will fit and if the pennies will stretch that far. Failing that the Beta is good second choice. I had one in my previous boat but it was a noisy little thing (what else would one expect from a "marinised tractor engine"

The Bukhs have a system of counter rotating balance weights which cut the vibration to next to nothing. I have a comparitively new Bukh now - only 20 years old - not even run in yet!

I wonder how many of the "marinised tractor engines" will still be around in 20 years time!

the reason why Bukhs have counterweights is that they have 360º cranks wich are by it's own nature unbalanced(basicaly a big single as both pistons go up and down in unisson) .To smooth the thing out you will need a lot of heavy power sapping conterweights.The extra cost and weight would be put to better use by adding a third cylinder on a 120º crank like you have on Betas and Yanmars.This is also a better performing setup as you can increase engine speed for the same capacity wich results in better smootness and torque if the thing is properly designed.
So Beta everytime,it even has a better placed raw water pump than the yanmar.
 
I find your comment on your bukh funny."Not even run in yet" might be an overstatement.Have you measured the cylinder bores,valve stems and so on?.You might be surprised.It depends of course on the engine hours but I can tell you that the Bukhs I've come accross with that sort of age are pretty much clapped out and most of them have suffered head warp due to failure of the very badly undersized raw water pump.I don't hide the fact that I dislike the design.It's full of (heavy) features that may have been all the hype when it was designed but when you look at the modern ,reliable and longlasting designs on the market today you don't see any of those features included.You don't need counterotating wheights,those are a solution for a problem that didn't have to be there.And you certainly don't need variable injection timing.Lighter castigs would also be a good idea and so on.
Well.it's just an opinion...
 
Feeling so guilty that I do not contribute.....yet. Rest assured, when I'm ready to assist someone in here, I will give them my bets.

Can't thank you enough for your contributions. Mind's fairly well made up to go for a Beta....just hope I don't have to replace the shaft and propeller; both brand new.

At Sibs in September ran into an old mate who sells a well known range of boats in the Solent area.

When I asked him what was the worst part of his job, his reply was trying to get Volvo to sort out warranty problems which are clearly design faults.

For example, the exhaust elbows were perforating after 1 seasons use. (My 4108 is 29 yrs old and the elbow is still unperforated). He had four cases of this fault and Volvo were not interested... very frustrating for both the owner and the dealer, who is "seen not to be doing anything"
