My Yanmar 4J engine manual say to use 20 or 30 SAE, single grade oil in the transmission. I can't find single grade oil hereabouts apart from some silly-expensive Yanmar stuff. Will any bog standard mineral multigrade do?

I don't know specifically for the 4J but for the 1, 2, and 3 cylinder engines the advice is to use engine oil. The advice to use a monograde suggests that there are no high loadings that need EP additives, so a 15w-40 engine oil should be perfectly OK.

My 4J engine had a Kanzaki gearbox which used ATF. Different engines of that series may have other gearboxes, and saildrives may take something different again. It important to check the gearbox or saildrive recommendation, not just one for the engine.

I thought yanmar issued a revision to their manuals years ago changing the 15w40 engine oil recommendation for some of their gearboxes to SAE 20 or 30 as the additives in modern engine oil was coating the clutch material and causing the clutches to slip.
You may have trouble finding SAE 20 but SAE 30 should be easy enough to find. Most motor factors should stock it or be able to get it for you. It is commonly used in older lawn mowers.
