Yanmar Starting Problems

I was the OP and have solved the starter problem on my boat to the point where one quick touch of the key reliably gets the donk purring. My solution? Get rid of the 36 year old asthmatic 2GMF lump and replace it with a new 3YM20. It even has a heater for chilly mornings.

We had some trouble with a 3GM30- with the basic switch panel. I discovered corrosion inside the keyswitch which was enough to limit current to the solenoid. I stripped down the keyswitch, cleaned up the contacts and re-assembled with some silicone base grease. No further hassle.
The solenoid was fine.
Don't go stripping down big stuff first!
