I have just been quoted £2.62 + vat for one copper sump drain plug washer for a Yanmar 1GM10 engine. I know that engines parts are pricey but this seems excessive.

Does anyone out there know of a suitable substitute from another source that can be used to ensure a good seal around the plug.

As an aside does anyone also know a substitute for the oil filter for the same engine as again, these seem expensive for a fairly ordinary item.

As regards the oil filter I would stick to the Yanmar one as we once compared the filtering area of an o.e. one, in this case Ducati to an alternative and the o.e. one actually had about 3 times the filtering area.For the difference in cost it seems sensible IMHO.Copper washers can be picked up at most automotive suppliers.

Hi Dave,
I thought you might like to know for future reference according to the manufacturer's manual Yanmar 1GM10s are not meant to be drained through the sump. And you're dead right, their parts are horrifically expensive.

Thanks John. Yes I had read that the oil should be removed through the dipstick hole. I don't know about you but I like to think that when I drain the oil any small bits of debris are also removed which I feel does not happen when the oil is sucked out.

Surely if there is a drain plug to the sump it is there to be used for just this purpose.

Isn't the reason for dipstick oil changes is that there isn't room to put a can underneath the sump on most boats? I saw engines at SIBS that have a pump attached to the sump drain so one can pump it out from there, which does seem like a good idea.

As for your solid gold copper washer, if you hold the old one in an old pair of pliers and heat it to cherry red, then drop it into cold water, you'll soften it so it can be reused. Otherwise, take it into a back street garage and they'll probably give you a new one that will fit from their oddments box

If someone would repeat the advice posted before about alternative filters for the 1gm10, and also advise how I can bookmark the advice, to retain for future use, I should be very grateful.

Crosland 672 or Purflux LS489A according to the cross-refs for the oil filter. just got one £4.25

Hi...with normal copper either way will anneal it sufficiently, quenching is a lot quicker, and gives a more even effect. For bigger items, leaving it around to cool can leave it a bit patchy as some bits of it cool quicker than other bits.....but either way is well sufficient in the case of a sump-plug washer!
Also on the 1GM10, you change the filter every third oil change, according to Yanmar...but that had better be the correct original spec filter...

One reason for not draining via the sump plug on a 1GM is that when you take it out you end up with a handful of odd bits of strainer, spring and things. Note well the order in which they come out! I usually did it this way, though, and had no problems. Fortunately there was just enough room for a drain tray.

Really confused me when I changed boats and ended up with a 3GM - couldn't find a drain plug anywhere! There isn't one...
