I have a 2007 Hanse 400e with a YANMAR 3JH4E engine and a SD50 saildrive. The engine & gearbox is serviced each year in accordance with the manufacturer's directions. I noticed some gearbox oil had leaked out under the engine; upon checking the gear oil dipstick the level was down a little and there was some form of contaminant (not water) on the surface of the oil. It looked like dust of some sort.
I had the boat hauled out and the saildrive oil changed to Quicksilver High Performance. The yard said that although SAE80W-90 was recommended in the Yanmar manual (& which had been used) this was not really adequate and the higher specification Quicksilver was preferred.
I have been given 2 opinions as to what has caused the problem. #1 is that the gasket on the upper gear casing has failed with #2 being the lower seal (behind the propeller) failure. I've run the engine/gearbox for 6 hours since the oil change and there has been a further (very) small loss of oil.
The engine has been run for 420 hours in total and never misses a beat. The gearbox operates normally and gear changes are smooth.
Has anyone any experience of this problem?
Many thanks in advance for any suggestions.
