I have removed the anode from my sail drive. Behind it all two backing plates fixed to the sale drive casing. Please see the attached photos. My question is do I need to replace these as well as the anode itself ? Given that they are not in the slightest bit corroded I am guessing they can stay where they are ? Also, should I use Duralac when fitting the new bolts?

I only have a solid anode on my SD20s so I'm not sure whether the split anode conversion always comes with new backing plates. If yours are in good condition and you can buy the split anodes without the plates and it's a worthwhile cost saving, then I would do so, otherwise you might find that that the plates are included so you might as well use them.

A dab of grease is all you need provided that your anodes are making good contact directly with the sail drive which you can easily check with a multimeter once you have fitted them. Once you tighten up the bolts the grease will be squeezed aside and contact should also be made through the threads.

It’s worth taking the prop off and greasing the spline at least every other time as if they’re left too long they can seize on the spline and then it’s a big job.
