As normal for all spares for nautical use, the oil filter for the Yanmar 4JHE in my Sun Legend 41, costs a lot of money.

The same part, for cars is much less expensive, although, at the very end, the manufaturer is often the same.

Can anybody suggest a car oil filter suitable for my Yanmar ?

On my previous boat a Farymann diesel engine has happily lived since the beginning (and still is...) with a Volvo car oil filter.

Thank you

Rico

Do not know answer to your question but I have a Yanmar 2GM20 and would like to know the car oil filter equivalant. I had problems with the Yanmar alternator belts seeming to be too big and they cost over £10 each and they do not drive the water pump so another belt is needed also. (NB the report in Sailing Today July 2002 wrongly states one belts both drive water pump and alternator) I now run on a slightly smaller belt which is a motor industry standard manufactured by "Gates" which cost £3.56. If anyone wants to know the reference number post a message and I will get it from my boat at weekend.

This re-iterrates an ealier posting and I copied down the equivalent filters for my Yanmar 1GM10.
Coopers 2819, or a Mazda323, or Crosslands 672 were the ones listed. Do not know if the larger Yanmars use the same Oil filter.

Try getting filters from www.asapsupplies.com they use standard automotive equivalents which are cheaper the Volvo/Yanmar etc. When you receive them, contact your local automotive parts guy and you will usually get them even cheaper!!

Re: Yanmar oil filter here we go again!

Yes U R right, this is 1 of the advantages of using a base industrial engine. My engine is a KUBOTA & if U go 2 motor factors filters & belts R available @ very low prices.

Just a comment ,,

the guys who design engines Yanmar, Volvo whatever, all use as many standard catologue parts as they can, to cut production costs, economies of scale and all that, they just get the bits from someone else, this covers oil filters, fan belts, oil seals etc etc ...it wouldnt suprise me if it went as far as piston rings, pistons and con rods

typically case: the timing chain tensioner in a rover 2000 was the same as in a Jag 2.8 and a triumph 2000

SO ......go to your local auto parts depot and save money!

To add late to this thread, I used your numbers at car parts locally and found another number. I know it fits as I fitted two today.

Fram PH6811

Also, from the workshop manual all 3 yanmars in the gm range 1,2 and 3gm all use the same filter.

hope this helps.

Also, I have brought home my workshop manual if anyone requires any pages scanned, just the odd one give me a PM.
