Please could someone tell me the the realastic expected life span of a yanmar MG 20 freshwater cooled marine diesel engine maintained to the maufactures recommendations. A friend told me not to expect more than 2000 hours! can this be right?

Was he offering to buy it off you then /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
5000 should be easily acheived. Judging by some of the lifespans admitted to on another thread in this forum that would make it barely run in!

2,000 hours!!!!!!!

Crikey, if its been well looked after then its only just getting going!

Dread to think how many my diesel has done.... its not a yanmar, but is 30yrs old, and has been used at least half of all weekends in those years, plus been to gibraltar and back twice and extensively cruised around the UK.... perhaps 20 to 30,000 hours?

I've even noticed in the yachting press the suggestion that those sort of hours is the likely life of a marine diesel. Nonsense. Providing an engine is properly maintained, the life expectancy is less about hours run than the nature of those hours. Lots of short runs from cold is far more harmful than a much greater total of hours from long runs -- just like London taxis compared to something doing a 1 mile school run every day. That said, an engine in a marine environment is subject to other froms of decay, particularly in a damp boat.

Typically diesel cars go for 150,000 to 300,000 miles on an engine - given a realistic average mph of 30, 150,000 is 5,000 hours, and 300,000 is 10,000 (and over the whole life of a car 30mph is a good average (my Volvo's computer reckons I average a bit less than that despite lots of long runs and not living in a city). And car engines are pushed harder than marine engines - my Volvo turbodiesel car generates 56 bhp per litre whilst my non-turbo Yanmar in the boat generates about 22 bhp per litre.

As others have said, maintenance is everything, particularly oilchanges
