Does anyone know of a reasonably priced mechanic who knows yanmar engines. We have a few issues including a whining noise and would initially like a mechanic who could come out for a few minutes to listen to the engine and answer some questions. We are based at Fambridge and would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

Can you get to B-Sea?,
If so John Collins of DB Marine.

Saying that as Tidclay says, where is the noise coming from? Whining noise is very odd from the engine.
Does is wine in neutral, forward, reverse?
Have you checked gearbox oil levels?

Is it a whining noise or a screeshing noise?

Get a big screwdriver and use it as a stethoscope. Listen to the altenator.
Take off the belt to the altenator and spin the pully. Does it spin free and easy?

I suspect you are asking a bit much - the individual needs to make a living so your 'few minutes' probably needs to be raised to a half day including travel time etc, especially if you have a list of questions too.

Thanks for suggestion re John Collins

Just to confirm, I have previously checked the various areas suggested above and more. Also, I am not looking for a freeby and am quite happy to pay for someones time - I just want to make sure that that person has knowledge of yanmar engines including gearboxes...

do you get the noise when your underway?

We get the whining noise when under way, the faster we go the louder it whines. It does not whine in neutral, whatever the engine speed
Sounds like a singing prop, this can happen due to cavitation off the leading edge of the prop, it causes vibration and creates the sound, this is quite common.
speak to a propeller specialist with info on engine spec, gearbox type and ratio, and prop size, is it 2 or 3 blade prop?

Not the prop I'm afraid, as this was replaced and no difference in noise

Mike French, of French Marine in Brightlingsea, would be a good person to talk to. He very quickly got to the bottom of an issue, aboard Stargazer, which had foxed four other outfits over a span of eighteen months. He and his team are both practical and knowledgeable - and go out of their way to keep costs down for an owner. He is also the East Coast Yanmar agent - which gives access to the expertise of E P Barrus (importer) who are also very helpful people.

Second vote for French Marine, fantastic people.
