Yanmar Impeller Removal

As promised in the thread on the Speadseal here is the photo showing how awkward it is to get at the raw water pump on certain Yanmar engines. This is an 88 horse power engine dating from 1988, and there is little more than 4 inches between the pump cover and the back of the starter motor.
the knurled nuts on the speedseal, modified with coin slots, can be seen to the left of centre of the photo.

I have taken a small bearing puller and modified it for use in the confined space, with the addition of a free floating steel strap with a screw to force the points of the puller in to the rubber of the impeller.

Makes you wonder why designers come up with engine layouts like that. They should be made to do an impeller change in a gale and see how they get on. The 1GM10 is not too bad but even in a marina it's a fiddly job with howls of anguish echoing around. Mr Speedseal is now a bit richer.

Thanks for that. I have had trouble getting mine back in as there isn't enough room to get a purchase. I use this.....

just to keep things interesting my 1gm10's water pump has a 4'ft narrow bilge under it. The engine has a tray to catch dropped nuts & bolts but it doesn't reach as far as the pump!

4 inch gap, you are well blessed with space! On the JH series the space is only a fraction more than the depth of the impeller and impossible to use a puller. An improvement was made to later models, they fitted a smaller starter motor to give an extra half inch!
