Hello All,
Does anyone know whereabouts the oil level should be in a Yanmar gearbox? I checked the dipstick at the weekend and there is a mark on it approx 5mm from the end of the dipstick, but it doesn't state min or max, and the handbook doesn't help much either. Should the oil level be above the mark, and if so, how much above?
cheers,
Ben

The oil should be on the mark when dipping without screwing the cap home

There's no need for high and low marks as the gearbox doesn't consume oil like an engine.

The oil should come up to the mark, when the lid is unscrewed, cleaned and replaced (not screwed in). If no oil on the stick, add more oil. If above the mark, you've overfilled it.

If its a YSE 8 or 12 then thats the level but if you are finding more than you put in and its very high then you may have a main bearing oil seal problem, I had oil from the crankcase migrate into the gear box that caused no end of problems.
To get to the seal you need to lift out the engine and split the gearbox, remove the flywheel and the seal is accesible from the back end. An easy job, but getting the engine out was the hard bit.
