I serviced the engine recently and part of this was to clean inside the exhaust elbow which mixes the raw water into the exhaust gases. On this forum there have been reports of a number of these elbows blocking up or leaking internally. In the latter case this has caused raw water to find its way back into the cyclinders causing massive damage.
The attached photo shows what I found - deep pitting. The elbow had been changed 3 years earlier and had done about 600 hours.
I have replaced the elbow with a nice shiney new one made in stainless. I have also painted the inside of the exhaust with high temperature (650 C ) paint to keep the steel and water apart.
It is an easy job to check this and IMHO very worthwhile. If you so rememeber you will very likely need a new gasket.
Anyone else had the same?
