Yanmar engine diagnostics / info

Hi All

I'm aware that you get smart phone apps linked to a dongle that you plug into your cars diagnostic port which enable you to access fault codes and engine management data etc. Does anyone know if there is a way of doing the same with a Yanmar 3ym or are the engines just not that sophisticated?

No. There is no electronics to diagnose. Just simple mechanical operation.

You can purchase systems to convert the analogue to NMEA2000 signals.
From there you can use plotters, mobiles etc to monitor your engine.

Yes, but that is not diagnostic, but simply picking up data from the oil pressure and water temperature sensors and displaying it on a different device rather than on analogue dials or warning buzzers.

You're correct of course.
No CAN messages to read etc.

True, there is no engine control module.
However, the Maretron will give you the following:

•Tachometer
•Engine Hours
•Coolant Water Temperature
•Engine Oil Pressure
•Boost Pressure
•Exhaust Gas Pressure
•Charging Voltage
•Drive Trim
•Fuel Filter Alarm
•Boost Alarm
•Coolant Water Level Alarm
•Engine Oil Pressure Alarm
•Exhaust (Salt Water Flow) Alarm
•Coolant Water Temperature Alarm


But of course you will have to invest in the sensors to record all of that data.
The good news is that it can all be displayed on your NMEA2000 or SeatalkNG chartplotter without extra instruments required.
Most of the input sensoring can be made with quite cheap generic sensors, but you may have to calibrate them in some way.

I decided not to go down that route, as it was ££££, but I will be aiming to get a better instrument panel readout in the next couple of years to replace the existing warning lamps.
