Has anyone had any experience with (or just has thought/discussed seriously about) repowering their sailing boat with a Yanmar electric saildrive?

If yes, do you care to share these here?

Not sure that it is at the stage where it has found its way into many boats. Just like any electric power plant in yachts it will have limited range compared with diesel and higher cost mostly due to the cost and limitations of current batteries. Again like other offerings such as Oceanvolt its main target will be day sailiers and sportsboats that are marina based and can live with thre limited range rather than cruising boat. They might also find a market with multihulls that can carry a spread of solar to help charging and are fast enough to get some regen. However they only go up to 15kw and don't have a regen option.

Suspect it will be like the hybrid they tried a few years ago and fail to make much impression. There may be more interest if a new battery technology emerges, but that is not likely because 48v is not really used widely elsewhere so no trickle down from say automotive developments.

That is unlikely to result in the development of 48v batteries suitable for powering boat engines. Indeed the article suggests that manufacturers may decide not to have a dedicated battery at all, but draw from the main traction battery. The benefit of 48v for noon traction services in cars is massive cost, space and weight reductions.

I know where there is an abandondoned sit-upon electric scooter and have wondered if I should scoop up its hub motor. I think those are probably 48V but havn't confirmed.

Some interesting electric bicycle motor conversion posts by GRIN technologies, who I believe do kits which can do regen. For example

With useful battery range it is going to be rather expensive if you dont happen to own an electric bicycle company though, and the battery's used dont seem to be fully waterproof.

One of those "pancake" stylee motors would not look out of place on the top of a dead Seagull longshaft though....
