The warning buzzer on my Yanmar type B engine control panel has stopped sounding when the key is turned to start the engine. It also does not sound when the engine is stopped using the stop button before turning the key off. The boat, engine (Yanmar 3JH4-E) and control panel (type B) are all just over two years old. The batteries etc are all in good condition and fully charged. Ive removed the control panel and checked that all connections are good. I also noticed recently that the hour meter intermittently was unreadable with the LCD display flashing parts of digits.

I have note previous threads regarding the hour meter display and the cold etc but cannot find anything regarding the warning buzzer.

Do I need to buy a complete new control panel or can you purchase the small board on which he buzzer is mounted behind the panel.

Any thoughts/help would be appreciated.

Maplin sell a wide variety of buzzers, eg www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=3219
They seem very susceptible to the elements, mine died last year, but I managed to fit one from the above link inside the casing of the original.
Cost is tiny compared with an "official" spare.
Add:- best to first check that the present buzzer is seeing 12v.

Does the oil pressure warning lamp still light before starting / after stopping the engine?

I'm not sure now you ask but think only the battery light was coming on before starting and after stopping. I'll check this for sure tomorrow when I go to the boat.

Thanks

If the oil light *isn't* coming on, then the buzzer won't work either (I've got the 'A' panel, but I'm 99.9% sure it's the same for the 'B').

If the oil light *isn't* coming on, some more things to check:

1) Check that the wire hasn't come off the oil pressure switch on the engine block (not sure where it is on your engine).

2) Assuming that the wire was connected: Unplug the wire from the oil pressure switch on the engine; with the key on, but the engine stopped short the wire to the engine block (it's safe!). The oil warning light should come on (and the buzzer should sound).

If it works consistently when shorting the wire to the block but not when connected to the switch (and there's a good, tight connection) then the oil pressure switch is duff. Anything else, and there's a wiring fault somewhere (or a blown oil warning lamp and a dead buzzer ).

Don't forget the negative leads if you end up checking connections.

Just back from the boat and have sorted the problem!

On removal of the wire from the oil pressure switch I discovered that the wire had seperated from the terminal inside the rubber sleeve protecting the terminal. I replaced the terminal and reconnected to the oil pressure switch and hey presto - buzzer and oil pressure warning light are now working. Result or what?

Many thanks for all the replies especially to misterg.

This is exactly the sort of thread that makes this forum so good - a load of clear informative suggestions and, just as important, the op coming back to explain how the problem was resolved. So many threads just drift off into nothingness.
