I have been following several threads - one of which suggested that Castrol Magnatec API-CF was suitable.

The Yanmar service manual just states that 'API-CD or better' is OK, but the user manual is confusing.

This states in addition to API-CD or better that one should avoid ACEA E-1, E-2 or B grades. which are developed for different types of diesel engine. The Castrol oil (and others I have seen) all seem to state that they are ACEA A3/B3.

Can anyone shed any light on the suitability of the Magnatec oil or should I look for something else?

The YM article seemed to instill a small element of fear in using the wrong oil type!

Thanks.

API CF-4 is the recognised substitute for API CD. As the article says, there is no ideal oil for an auxiliary yacht engine, you just have to use the nearest substitute and accept that things will not be perfect long-term.

You could always buy Yanmar's own oil, which when I last checked was to API CD.

The advice i was given by yanmar dealer in cornwall is to use a well known make of mineral oil, dont be tempted to use synthetic or semi

Seconded. I use a 'standard' 15/40 diesel oil to CD. Iwill let you know in 10000 hours whether it was the wrong decision. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif At the moment I have 500 hours on this regime.
