No., it just needs to be cleaned up where the seal lip contacts it. Clean it up with emery, start with coarse then finer till you get a nice satin/mirrior finish where the wear mark is.

Buy a multipack , bung it in the electric drill, use the finest that removes the scoring , if that doesn’t work use a courser one then go back to the smoother one

Start with around 300 - 400 grit, then when the mark is gone, go up to 600, 800, 1200, 1800 etc till it looks like a baby’s derriere.
+1 for the drill idea

Fair enough, but this is the "Practical" Boat Owner's forum, not the "Just Throw Money At It" forum.
My pump has done over 500 hours run time happily drip-free since my A$30 DIY refurb. To each his own.

Hmm but it's a lot of time.
It seems to me thw durability of the refurb is really down to how smooth you get that shaft. The rougher it is the faster it will wear the seal. Can you remember what grade you got to, that has lasted 500 hours?
