Following the cold spell I went to run up my dehler 34 fitted with the Yanmar. In a previous post I learned these engines have no pre heat facility although the panel indicates a glow plug and toggle switch. Is it possible to retro fit one as my engine took about 5 minutes turning over with key with lots of splutter and chugging with lots of smoke.

I have used the recommended technique of applying throttle with gearbox disengaged.

Thanks.

Should not need pre-heat. poor starting is usually air filter or restricted exhaust, or more serious poor compression. First thing is to take the exhaust outlet off and clean - also check exhaust system for soundness and signs of the hose delaminating and causing back pressure. Poor compression can be leaky valves, ring wear/bore wear or in rare cases bent con rods.

Can also be slow starter caused by poor battery, undersize cables/poor connections. If you're not sure put a meter at the battery terminals and check voltage as you press the starter and compare with the voltage at the starter. Shouldn't be less than 10V and preferably 11+

Did you use full throttle? My 2GM20 is a bit more reluctant to start when it gets down to about 0degrees C. It definitly needs full throttle when it's cold.
If it's turning over for 5 mins that is an awful long time. On one hand I would say there is nothing wrong with your battery if it turns that long.
Also you may know this but you shouldn't turn over that long with the cooling water open and your battery cables and starter will be getting a bit hot.
